I too was hoping for something better than Tommy Pham, but this is the type of free agent signing our Front Office Brass pursues. Just like last year Michael Taylor and Tellez. Players they hope can bounce back, or have decent seasons. This regime has not signed a single free agent on a multi year deal. They are afraid to do it, or the Owner doesn’t permit it.

I don't think Huntington signed anyone multi-year until Russell Martin in the 2012-13 offseason, after Huntington had been in place for five full seasons. They had a pretty good nucleus together by then, but no internal options at catcher - Rod Barajas and Michael McKenry had caught literally every inning in 2012.

This is 10 straight years of the same strategy and the team's how many games under .500 during that time? Which is worse, their way of doing business or our continued hope that they'll try something different?

The Pirates are not in the market for expensive FAs. And those who command high salaries will not choose the Pirates anyway. The right "fit" between the Pirates and MLB is for the FAs not in demand by other teams because of injury concerns, age and/or declining ability. This is why the Pirates don't offer more than 1-year deals. The Pirates wisely don't want to be on the hook for multiple years if the concerns about the player prove to be accurate (Michael A. Taylor). For the players, it's often a last chance to prove they have something left. And, if so, they want to parlay that into a spot on a better team the next year instead of tying themselves to a lousy organization (Chapman).

The problem isn't that the Pirates only offer 1-year deals for the type of free agent leftovers they sign. Even 1 year is a risk. The problem is that the Pirates won't or can't sign better FAs.

Concerning Pham, the bucs will be his ninth team since 2021. That doesn't
sound very promising.

They’ll probably release him before Spring Training ends and acquire Colton Wong to take his place because, you know, we could use another second baseman.
