One of the memories I have of him was Bob Prince mentioning the night he (Veale). He said *no one* dug in against him that night.

I was playing ball in my teens when Veale pitched here. We always used to imagine what it would be like to stand in the batter's box with him on the mound. He had to be 53-55 feet from home plate when he released the ball. It would've been frightening.

Also, does anyone remember how on those steamy summer nights when he pitched, he'd pull out from his back pocket that handkerchief that seemed the size of a table cloth to wipe the fog from his glasses? That had to freak out the hitters.

Oops - I left out that Veale had broken glasses that night, so went without.

Darn! A true broadcasting legend. And a great comic. I saw him play at Forbes Field when he was a rookie with the Braves.

Very sad news. The guy was a major league player but made such fun of himself. He's one of the people who I'd have loved to sit down with in a bar and just listen to him tell stories. My favorite of his jokes was the one where he told his dad that the Braves wanted to sign him for $3000, but his dad told him to forget it, that he didn't have that kind of money.

Or, a weekend series between the Braves and Astros when the Niekro brothers parents were in town to watch. Uecker said he spent more time visiting their parents than they did because of Phil's knuckleball always getting past him and getting to the backstop.

Now that’s funny!
