Interesting how the Cherington quote in the last paragraph doesn’t include signing free agents. Finally they’re admitting that spending on a quality free agent isn’t included in the plan. Now everyone can just relax in the offseasons ahead instead of getting all anxious waiting for that big signing, and then getting upset when each free agent becomes property of another team. I feel much better now.
a problem for the Pirates is that even less than big time free agents get paid more than the Pirates want to pay. Really a player like Skenes (especially if he goes year by year) will get more than the Pirates want to pay by his second arbitration year.
Absolutely. That’s why Skenes will likely be dealt away long before his sixth year. If he continues his dominance, his second arb year salary will be way more than Nutting can stomach. Worse still is that a double whammy awaits us. In addition to Skenes being traded, we’ll get back no more than a few minor league players in return, perhaps none of them ever helping the team right away or in the future.

If this losing streak continues he won’t last the month of April. I cannot believe that this season is already imploding.

I want to say Shelton will be gone by mid April. At 1-5 now, they could easily lose today (they lost Skenes' previous game). Yankees will sweep them. So we are looking at 1-9 or 2-8 at best after the NY series. Then St.L and Cincy. We could be looking at a 3-13 or 2-14 start. That should get both Dumb and Dumber fired. But Nutting doesn't care so it just depends on whether he feels like tossing a bone to his long-suffering fan base. And if he does get a new GM, he'll just toss him a roll of quarters and say, "here, take this and go build me a championship team."
Can anyone here play this game?

I'll say ASB for Shelton's release.

Matters not. Casey Stengel couldn't get 70 wins with this team.

The pre game introduction for Shelton contained a large round of boos. In two weeks they play Cleveland here, and if they are still losing more games then they are winning he may lose his job before the team heads out to California.

Hold your horses, fjk. According to Bob Nutting, the Pirates worked all offseason building a team designed to win a championship. Shelton was part of that brain trust. Forget that his record is one of the worst in Pirates management history. Are you sure you want that guy fired?

If they continue to lose more games during the next couple weeks someone is going to be the scapegoat, and it will be Shelton. Nutting will attempt to appease the fan base by firing Shelton. Personally at this time I don’t think Cherington will get fired, since he revamped this offseason many of the departments which report to him. If someone is to be thrown to the wolves I expect it to be Shelton, and Don Kelly will be named interim manager.

The manager is usually the first to go. In this case, though, they should both go. There’s very little going right anywhere in the organization. The trouble is, the guy who’ll hire the next GM is still going to be here.

After 16 games the Bucs are 5-11. These next 7 at home could be very important.I think they better have a winning home stand, or else there might be a change.

Shelton’s seat is getting warmer because this 3-4 home stand wasn’t very good. He better hope the players bring their A Games on this West Coast road trip because if not that seat might become real hot.
