3. Tyler Glasnow-great performance on the mound, arguably his best career outing so far (he had a good game last year against St. Louis). Box score won't show it, but he was hurt by an inconsistent and tight strike zone, and shoddy at best defense.

2. Starling Marte-2-4 with a homer and two RBIs, plus a walk and a stolen base.

1. Andrew McCutchen-only 1-4, but arguably the biggest hit he's had since the walkoff homer against the Cards in 2015. And he made a fine running catch in right field to take extra bases and an RBI away from Ben Zobrist.

Just because Glasnow had his best performance doesn't mean he was a star of the game. I agree he got some bad calls and bad scoring against him (struck a guy out, Cervelli missed ball, Harrison misses ball, guy scores an earned run?). He did look very good at times, but I would give Frazier the nod.

Frazier looked good at SS and then switched to 2B. His arm is very strong. He also had some key hits by scoring after a triple and then knocking in Hanson after he stole second.

3. Marte

2. Frazier

1. McCutchen

Frazier's AB with Hanson on base was a thing of beauty. He drove Hanson in on the 8th pitch of the AB. Not quite the same as Freese getting that double on the 12th pitch the other day, but it was sure fun to watch. Frazier needs a star for today.

Cervelli and JHay deserve consideration, but they both booted balls.  Frazier for sure but he had an error.

3) Glasnow - 6 runs is obviously too many but he didn't have much help and there were plenty of chances to turn that 6 into 10 or more.  He pitched out of trouble.  He held a tremendous offense more or less in check. At the end of the day he was the most important Pirate on the field and everyone has to feel good about his start.

2) Marte

1) CUTCH!

I like Frazier alot and he needs to play as often as possible and bat him lead off. If Polanco cannot play tomorrow, put Frazier in left field.

Frazier had two AB's ruined by terrible calls. One led to a K and the other to a weak ground out. Both calls were about 3 inches outside the strike zone and totally changed the AB from his advantage to him having to swing at anything. Why is it I'm about 90% on calling balls and strip from watching my TV and the they replay with the strike zone up , the umpires are around 50% ?

Frazier had a pretty bad error in that first inning that made Glasnow's numbers look much worse than they should have been.

I thought Glasnow showed a lot of poise. His facial expression was the same no matter if he was mowing Cubs down or if his fielders were watching baseball go under their gloves.

Poise is good. Glad that he was able to do that yesterday. Certainly big step in right direction.
