10 Day DL

Post by fjk090852-7 »

Does anybody besides me think that the change in the Disabled List period has seen more players go on the ten day list than whenever the DL period 15 days. Seems like more players have hit the list then in previous seasons.

If that's true it makes sense. When you know the player will be lost for 15 days but aren't sure the injury will last that long, you might leave him on the active roster and ride it out. When you're only dealing with a 10-day absence it makes more sense to DL the guy and replace him.

yeah, I think the change should help the Pirates. For the past few years they have seemed to play short often before deciding to place someone on the dl. Philosophy seemed to be it is better to wait and miss 4 or 5 games rather than 12 or 13. Of course it seemed like the Pirates held players out for 3 or 4 games and then decided to place them on the 15 day list.

I like the new rule. Does the 15 day DL even exist anymore?

I just never understood the rule after the time is up. How long is a player allowed on the DL before they have to be put on another? Frazier was due to come off a few days before he actually did return to the Pirates.

I think the 15 day DL is gone.

I thought they could basically keep him on there as long as they wanted but the guy's sucking up a 40-man roster spot unless he goes to the 60

The 10 day (like the previous 15 day) DL refers to the minimum number of days the player must miss. But you can leave the player on that list as long as needed.

So, Bastardo can be on the 10 Day DL all season?

There is the suggestion the stay should be tied to an actual injury. Teams tend to fudge a bit on that, but the rule is to allow recovery from injury without the team having to be a player short on the 25-man roster. The problem is that the player is still on the 40-man roster, until he comes off or gets transferred to the 60-day DL.

I think MLB needs to check on players or have a protocol so the system isn't abused (I've always thought that). Keeping a player on the 40 man isn't really that big of a deal.
