Marte Fan Reaction?

What do you think will happen by Pirates fans?

What do you think will happen with opposing fans?

Will you cheer him like you use to cheer him?

Will you only cheer good plays (meaning, not when he comes to at bat or announced)?

I think Pirates fans will cheer him the same.

I am going to cheer him like I always did. He did his time, he didn't try to deny it.

I hope opposing teams don't get on him too much and forgot about him. I expect some booing to occur, but not like Ryan Braun booing.

He'll get some boos from Pirates fans and there will likely be some negative signs (with Marte one liners) being held up by fans at PNC. But if he comes back and plays well, the boos won't last very long.

As far as the national reaction/fans of other teams reacting to him? I think there will be just about zero backlash whatsoever, for a few reasons:

1. Despite being a great all around player, Marte just isn't that well known. He's the furthest thing from a household name, even among baseball fans.

2. Despite what others may believe, the Pirates are an irrelevant franchise. Had Marte played for a team that had any sort of significance (if they were a team dominating their division, or hated like the Yankees, or a big story like the Cubs, etc) then the Marte story would likely have gotten a lot more attention.

But the fact remains that the Pirates are an afterthought. A PED suspension on the Pirates is like a tree falling in the woods, with very few people around to hear it.

What will your reaction be?

I agree with you about the national reaction. I think some boos, but he is not a household name and the Pirates aren't on the national stage.

I'd probably neither cheer nor boo if I were there. I think mostly it'll be an awkward silence of people waiting for something to happen.

If it were McCutchen I guarantee you'd be hearing about it nationally.

I'm hoping he comes back and plays great.

I'm by no means a fan of PEDs but it's an unfortunate part of sports that I've come to accept. Nothing we can do about it, really.

Had he been using PEDs and never got caught, sadly it's the same as him not having used them. For all we know, many players are using and they just haven't been caught.

There is one concern that I have, although admittedly, it's not a huge concern. If he comes back and we see a dropoff in his numbers over the next year or so, then we have to wonder if he's been a product of PEDs his whole career.

We need him to come back and perform the same as he has in the past. If he does, then he got caught, served his suspension and all is fine with me.

I wouldn't applaud him coming back from a suspension but I don't think I would boo either. If he stays clean and performs I will still cheer for his good plays. If he gets caught again then I will not. I love watching him throw the ball and get down the line. To me the punishment now takes some of the moral outrage away. He broke the rules, he has served his punishment and now he is back and is another baseball player again. If he repeats, then that will be different.

I expect the Ryan Braun treatment from other cities. Pirate fans will be reserved until he makes a great play or gets a big hit and then all will be forgotten. Cervelli was a PED user. Pirate fans don't seem to care about that.

You will hear boos but I don't think near Ryan Braun Levels. In this specific case I think the language barrier benefits guys like Marte. He's more anonymous. Also there's no direct evidence that Marte is the gigantic jerk that Braun is.

I think most Pirates fans know who he is, especially now with the PED suspension and us having losing record this year. It's hard to say how the fans will react the first time he plays at home- maybe mixed boos and cheers, maybe all cheers. The first time he drives in a go-ahead run though I guarantee you it will be all cheers.
