Minor League option (question)

Does anyone understand how these work?

Why did a guy like Alen Hanson have no more minor league options to start this season? Will that apply to any of the Pirates AAA pitchers for next year? Will Brault, Kingham or Holmes have to make the 25 man roster?

Brault has used options in 2016 & 2017, so he has one optional year remaining.  Kingham is out after 2017 unless he gets an extra year due to some injury clause, which is possible (I don't know the rules there).  Holms used his first option this year, so he has two more years.  Hutchinson is out after this year.  Glasnow has used two, so he still has next year.

Got this all from the Pirates Prospects Player Pages.

As for how they work in general, here's an article:

EDIT:

An option isn’t used if a player is injured all year or they spend less than 20 days in the minors during the course of the season.

Not sure whether Kingham used one in 2015 or 2016 under this clause. He had very limited time, but not sure if it was under 20 days.

I don't understand this totally either. For example, Alen Hanson was out of options but he was only on the Pirates in 2016. He didn't use three options. Is there some time period of how long you are on the 40 Man Roster and still in the minors?

It's in the article, but I will summarize. Options begin once you are placed on the 40-man roster. After that time, you have to be 'optioned' to the minors during the season. Any season in which you spends more than 20 days in the minors, you burn one option year. You get 3. Hansen was added to the 40 on 11/20/2013, so he used options in 2014, 2015, & 2016 since he was in the minors more than twenty days in each of those three years.

For any season you're on the 40-man roster and get sent to the minors one or more times, that's one option. So if you're on the 40-man roster and get sent to the minors one or more times in 3 different seasons, that uses up all 3 options. There are a couple exceptions noted in the link wvbucco provided. Hanson was on the 40-man roster but got sent down in each of the 3 previous seasons. Not making the team out of spring training and spending the entire year in the minors still uses up an option if you were on the 40-man roster. That was Hanson's situation.

EDIT: Didn't see wvbucco's above explanation when I posted.

How I understand the option situation is that once a player gets added to the 40 man roster he can be sent to the minors at the end  of spring training three separate times. For example if a player was added to the winter roster in November 2014 he could be sent to the minors  during spring training in 2015, 2016 and 2017.  If he came up in July 2016 for ten days and then got sent down that is not another option. There is only one option per season. In Hanson's case he was sent out three years so this year he had to come north with the Bucs or else they had to place him on waivers. It is a little complicated so I hope this helps somewhat. I did not see the above two posts so I am sorry for the repeat post.

That's right. Also if a player made the team out of spring training and was send down during the season that would be an option. Or if a player was added to the 40-man roster as he was called up to the majors, but subsequently sent back down, that would be an option. If you're on the 40 and get sent down at any time(s), that's the option for that year.

Great, thanks. So it's based on when a player makes the 40 man roster. So Kingham would have to go through waivers to be put in Indy next year?

I am thinking so since it looks like he probably had the spent the minimum 20 days in the minors during both of his shortened years.  He had 6 starts. I think it would be tough to have 6 starts but be in the minors less than 20 days total.
