So just throwing this out there...



With Nova now back to his career norms and our starting rotation having collapsed, is the Ray Searage at fault?



His magic pixie dust was credited so often when pitchers outperformed their norms, now that they've been underperforming for a while (2 years actually) is Ray Searage to blame?

I don't see how it can be his fault. On the other hand, it's beginning to look like he may have been overvalued as a guru.

Maybe they would be even worse without Searage?

The fact that the rotation is as bad as it is even with Searage, is even more proof that we need to get rid of the guy with the loser mentality that's currently employed as our GM.

If the Pirates really believed that they were uniquely able to fix pitchers, then (a) they wouldn't have waited till the absolute deadline to acquire Happ and then Nova; and, (b) they would have signed them long-term for cheap before fixing them and letting them get to the open market. NH has made at least one cocky remark after they acquired Niese, but on the whole I don't think they believe the legend themselves.

I think it depends more on the pitcher than the coaching. Maybe he gets thru to some but can't get thru to others. Maybe some would have improved with or without Searage while others benefited from his coaching. Happ has been a different pitcher since he met Searage. Nova was for awhile but then regressed. Cole has declined while still under Searage. Morton has improved since going elsewhere. There's no magic formula. Searage seems to be well respected throughout MLB. But there are pitchers he can help and others he can't.

I don't think he was overvalued. You can't dismiss the work he did with certain reclamation projects (AJB, Happ, Liriano before he fell apart) and to an extent Nova before this collapse.



This should signify that Pittsburgh should move in another direction as far as brining in nothing but reclamation projects. It would be nice to see someone that isn't one.

Exactly. Give Jordan Spieth a set of cheap knockoff golf clubs from Target, and he can probably still knock a five iron to within ten feet from 215 out. Doesn't follow from that that Jordan Spieth should go play the tour with lousy clubs. Would love to know what Searage could do with a rotation like Cleveland's or Washington's.

Not sure about Huntington but for sure we don't have to worry about anyone stealing him. His judgement certainly suspect haven't seen any great moves he's made. Hurdle is a disaster, was good for the first few years but his record and this teams reflects his record, content with losing never going to win the big ones. If Hurdle is resigned, this team is doomed for the forseeable future.
