"Nicasio did a lot of good in Pittsburgh. He is a good player and a good person. We wish him the best of luck in catching on with another team in hopes he can help down the stretch."

"The Dodgers came in on pace to win the most games in a season ever, and we couldn't average 20,000 for the series. Bob's...not happy right now."

"This was purely a baseball move. We felt the Pirates would be better off without an 8th inning setup guy with a 2.85 ERA, a 1.117 WHIP anf a K for every inning pitched. It was definitely NOT about saving what amounts to little more than a minimum salary."

"I'm happy to announce that Juan Nicasio is this year's recipient of The Pittsburgh Pirate's internal altruism mandate. Last year we were able to place both Reese McGuire and Harold Ramirez into another needy organization at a critical time of the season. This year we decided that we would raise the bar with the gifting of a player from our major league roster. No sacrifice is too great for this franchise to make in order to further the careers of our players and improve our fellow MLB organizations. I'd like to personally thank Mr. Nutting for his vision and generosity in allowing me to continue these compassionate gestures on behalf of the players and the game of baseball."

“Given our recent record and regression in the standings, we intend to give the higher leverage innings to other pitchers that may or will impact our 2018 club,” Huntington said in a statement. “We acknowledge the minimal amount of money saved by making this move, however, as a result of our decision and Juan’s pending free agency at the end of the season, we felt it appropriate to attempt to move Juan to a better situation for him.”

More significantly....

“Rather than help a direct competitor and recognizing the difference in claiming order between trade and outright waivers, we chose to take the chance to see if by placing Juan on outright waivers he would end up with a different playoff contender, preferably one in the American League,” Huntington said.

I added the bold.

What a joke of a response. Appropriate attempt to move Juan to a better situation means having Philly claim him? Wouldn't a better situation be trading him for a minimal return to a better ball club, one that could make the playoffs possibly? And who cares if the return was going to be minimal? Better than allowing him to leave for no return. Sometimes minimal returns in situations like this help down the road. I'm sure Dog will defend him again.
