They had an on base percentage under .200 in the series.

If the Indians hadn't blown a 3-1 series lead last year and then blown game 7, Maddon and the Flubs would be getting hammered right now and viewed as failures.

Maddon better be counting his lucky stars that his team overcame his presence in game 7 last year and found a way to win. Otherwise things would be getting ugly for him (or beautiful, if you're a Cubs hater like me).

Dodgers cleaned their clocks from what I have seen in the games. Cubs may have kicked teams around, but they looked less of a threat this season. Heck the Bucs had their number a few times!

Bucs now need to get their bullpen... upgraded add a couple relievers, specifically a lefty.... secure a 3rd baseman, add someone to spell Marte, McCutchen and Polanco in OF and have Nutting sell the club...Searage teach the young hurlers that 3rd pitch, and hope Glasnow matures this offseason to be a major league pitcher...Next Season could be our year! 8-)

I know, I have offseason enthusiasm...Beat'em Bucs

Unfortunately as long as the Cubs have Rizzo and Bryant they're going to be good, but they have to be disappointed on the ROI from Heyward, Lester and Zobrist. I think the Cubs just learned a tough lesson about player trajectory after the seasons they got from Schwarber, Baez and Russell, in that it's not always a positive progression. For the Pirates, see Cole and Polanco, it's variable year to year.

If you are the Cubs, are you giving up on Baez, Russell and Schwarber?

Do you give Lester, Heyward, and Zobrist the benefit of the doubt because they helped win a WS already? Heyward had a better year than last year.

I think that Russell and Baez proved to have high enough floors that they're best to hold. Schwarber is looking closer to Pedro Alvarez than a superstar, but his defense doesn't hurt you enough in left to jump ship.

Lester, Heyward and Zobrist are falling into a difficult category for the Cubs, more the latter two, Lester is still a workhorse SP even of he might not be an all star going forward. Heyward and Zobrist are going to be overpriced bench players pretty soon.

Ben Zobrist was a weird offseason contract story to me whenever that was happening (two years ago?)  Yeah, he's good player, and that kind of niche player is nice to have on any team, but THAT nice?  It seemed like there was this big arms race to get a guy who is essentially a good utility player.

I thought the consensus was that he'd be ok on a two-year deal and a stretch at three. I'm pretty sure the Cubs signed him for four years, I'm sure they can hide him somewhere but they're in a place where they're going to keep tinkering with the roster until they retool the right way. They sort of remind me of where the Penguins were after their first stanley cup win, they have the core to get back there, but not with the current in house talent.

While I am happy that the Cubs will not be a World Series Champ two years in a row, I take no joy in the fact that it was the Dodgers who eliminated them this year, and even worse, who will now be in the Series. The Dodgers simply can outspend everyone.

With respect to the Cubs' young players, if players like Baez and Russell are problems, I would love for the Pirates to be experiencing the same type of problems. While Baez strikes out way too much, his versatility, speed, defense and power are all assets. Russell too features power and defense. Baez and Russell on the left side of the infield would be good additions to the Pirates.
