Just watched the Astro's beat the Dodgers and a manager who manged with his eyes and not the book. Hope Clint Hurdle was watching he and lots of other manager could learn a lot from AJ. I get so tired of Hurdle turning over a game to his 8th inning guy and then the closer for the ninth no matter what. So stupid, AJ just showed how it should be done.

One game, with at most four games left in the year. Hinch didn’t manage like that in the regular season.

Good for Hinch! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. My feeling is that if the mgr has to hope that a new pitcher can do as well as the guy's who's being removed, then he probably shouldn't be removed. That strategy worked for about the first 100 years of MLB until Tony LaRussa decided he had to have specialists for each late inning and everyone else fell into line. Nice to see some common sense managing. Very rare in this day and age of MLB.

Uh, wade leblanc and Steven brault both had 3 inning saves for the pirates this year.  Those weren't even in the world series.

Yes, but big differences. LeBlanc entered the game ahead 12-3 and Brault entered the game ahead 10-1. It was mop up duty and pointless to waste another pitcher in a blow out. Furthermore, had they come out it would not have been a save situation for the closer. Peacock entered a World Series game in the 6th with runners at 2nd and 3rd and 1 out. Ground out and WP made it 5-3. He remained in the game protecting a 2-run lead and went 3.2 innings, 0 hits, 1 BB, 4 Ks. I don't think that's comparable to allowing guys to pitch longer in blowouts.

Peacock finished nicely, but he is a starting pitcher. It is very unusual to bring in a starter to relieve games. Do you want Hurdle to bring in Taillon or Nova in relief?

There has been a lot of moves the last two years in the post season that teams didn't practice during the regular season.
Does anyone on here really believe CH would not have brought in his 8th inning guy and his 9th in guy in the same situation. If you do you either haven't been watching the Pirates during his tenure or just want to argue. The announcers were commenting on Hinch was managing with his eyes and not the book.

Hinch hasn't been managing like that all year. Once Peacock was a starter, he hasn't come in relief. Hinch also used Verlander in relief in this post season. This isn't something Hinch always does.



I assume the Astros had a plan to use McCullers and Peacock together since they both wouldn't get a start.

That's not the point. Regardless of who was pitching in relief, the common strategy with a 2-run lead is to get to the 8th and then use your 8th inning guy and then go to the closer in the 9th. The fact that the reliever in the game was normally a starter is less significant than the fact that Hinch didn't follow normal 8th and 9th inning protocol.
