Sad to see him go, wish him well and hope he has an MVP year so he can make up the potential hundreds of millions he lost by signing a contract extension a year early.

that said.

there was no where near as big of a correlation with the Pirates finally breaking .500 and returning to the playoffs and Cutch reaching Prime.

go back and revisit 2013 stats.

Pirates were mid pack in offense.

they won in HUGE part due to ridiculous variance by no name scrap heap reclamation project pitchers and young guys.

well there are 16 pitchers named vs. one Cutch. They should have more of an impact.

I couldn't disagree more, most of the players on this list were awful and had very litte to do with bucs contending. On the other hand Cutch had everything to do with it.

they were awful in general

but not in those years, and not in 2013 for sure

if the Pirates pitching isn't as amazing out of nowhere as it was in 2013. Cutch is just another Jason Bay or Brian Giles on a mediocre team. Next best position player in 2013 was Pedro Alvarez

they caught lightning in a bottle with a bunch of fluke career years from junk pitchers.

look at the stats. they had 6 main starters (at least 10 starts)and the highest ERA among them was 3.59 that is astounding.

That's an interesting opinion.  Marte, Russ Martin, and possibly Walker were all better position players than Pedro in 2013. So that makes Pedro undoubtedly Fourth most valuable and possibly 5th depending on the stats used.

Not to mention Cutch put up an 8.5WAR and 15% k rate.

It's takes a talented baseball mind to discredit the contribution of super-elite performance like that. That's not Jason Bay or Giles, that's Barry Bonds
