I didn't see this coming. I have to believe that this means Phil Evans makes the 26-man. Evans is younger and can platoon with Moran or Polanco.
I'm happy for Evans, but sorry for Frazier. I wish we kept both, and cut the 14th relief pitcher.

Darn shame about Frazier.- He would have been a good influence on the younger players. Hopefully someone will pick him up.

Seems odd maybe they told him he wasn`t going to make the team and that gave him the opt out option, instead of being cut. Kinda let the vet save face so to speak.
He will find a team if he still wants to play.

Frazier signed a minor league deal with the Pirates that included an opt out clause. Under that provision, the Pirates had until March 25 to inform him if he would make the team or else risk losing him if he exercised his opt out clause. That deadline passed without the Pirates telling him that he made the team.
During yesterday's broadcast Shelton said it came down to the issue of versatility. He said they still hadn't decided on a 4 or 5 man bench with 9 or 8 relievers. But I think it's clear they will have a 4-man bench and want those guys to be very versatile. Frazier (1B, 3B) is the least versatile among Gonzalez (inf-of), Evans (1B, 2B, 3B, OF) and Difo (inf-of). Also, Frazier has back issues that have limited him this spring and will likely limit his availability during the season. He had the option of honoring his minor league contract with Indy or opting out of his affiliation with the Pirates altogether and becoming a free agent so that he has a chance to hook on with another MLB team. He chose that option.

While I think this team is not gonna win hardly any games I thought having Frazier around would be a good thing at least early on in the season. Don’t understand the move to cut him and not have him on the roster to start the season.

Todd Frazier Moves On
Jason Mackey is reporting the Bucs are interested in bringing back Todd Frazier if he does not receive another offer from a MLB Club.
