The PPG has an article on the contract status of the current Pirates.

The only free agents are Cahill, Miller and Tsutsugo. Shreve did not get the service time needed to make him a free agent now.

I remember the Good Old Days when your contract depended on recent performance. How could someone like Perez think he should get a raise?

I remember the Good Old Days when your contract depended on recent performance. How could someone like Perez think he should get a raise?
Perez got slightly over the minimum this year. I'm guessing he would be thrilled just to remain in the majors next year. But I suspect he will be nontendered. Hard to imagine the Pirates or any other team taking him to arb where the arbitrator might give him more than the team wants to pay, which should be as close to the minimum as possible. He would probably agree to whatever contract he is offered but I doubt the Pirates want him back.

A far cry from the old days indeed. Before free agency, players were on 1 year contracts that were increased or decreased from year to year depending on the season they just had. Several of the 1960 Pirates were playing for less money than they made in 1959 because of disappointing 1959 seasons.

I'm sure that you remember that many players had to supplement

their incomes in the off season. Ex- Roy Face - carpenter.

That's the way things are. What did they pay for houses, cars, college educations for their kids, agents, TAXES.....

Owners make a heckuva lot more money these days, too.

Nobody mentions that.

They make money because we're willing to pay for TV packages, clothing, you name it. Stuff didn't exist back then. Just the way it is.

Today's money looks cheap next week.

Of course, I probably won't be able to pay him, but that'll be another story.
