Last offseason the Pirates hired John Baker as Director of Player Development. I have heard him speak a couple times, and now I have read a couple articles while he is conducting a camp for some of the minor league players at Bradenton, and he seems like a very intelligent person. Hopefully his ideas and teaching will help the young prospects to reach their potential of good major league players. Gone are the days when the previous regime seemed like they conducted a more structured culture. It appears Baker and his group have a more individualized culture , and teaching fundamentals in order to prepare the prospects for the ups and downs of a Major League player.

Nice report. Is Baker a former catcher?

Yes he is a former catcher, and was more of a journeyman player, not a first string player.

Yes, was mentioned numerous times in the book MoneyBall, was from their 2002 draft. Not to be confused with the Fat Catcher, Jeremy Brown.
