I don't think money is holding them back from doing it again. They need to draft, develop better. Who did you want for the 2015 team? Who did you want to replace? The team was set. They didn't need to add much (they traded for a starting Catcher). That's why the payroll didn't increase much or free agents were brought in.
Yes, more money helps. I agree with that. The biggest problem is guys not developing into stars. The potential assumption with Cole and Taillon coming up together was huge. If those two pitch like #1 and #2 picks, the Pirates will be right back in this. They also need Marte and Polanco to be the players they were projected to be. Can they do it? That's the question that management needs to answer. If they can't, then develop another window of opportunity.
It's not a surprise that the Cubs, Indians, Dodgers, and Astros are top teams. It isn't because of their big free agent signings, its because of their young core. They even brought up last night how all of the Astros top picks made huge impacts (Correa, Bregman, Springer, flipping Appel).
When will you learn Dog? Use your head and do some critical thinking when you compare the Buccos last 3 winning teams to the Indians and the Astros of the last two years. Yes all three teams made the playoffs but only the Indians and the Astros made it to the WS. That is far and away a big difference than making the playoffs 3 yrs running an only advancing to the NLDS once and loosing that one quite handily. Not a good comparison by any means. You will say just about anything to save face Dog. You need to not be afraid to admit that you are as wrong as many other posters here who make mistakes with their comments and freely admit it. Just check out the site you will see. Time you simply give it up and quit trolling some the guys who contribute thoughts. I am tire of seeing guys here trying to set you strait and you are too stubborn to admit it.

Sorry, technically it started today. I didn't see any moves yet by any teams. How can anyone make real predictions yet? It isn't even known if McCutchen will be signed or released.
Here is a schedule of some deadlines:
•Nov. 2: Commencement of a five-day, exclusive negotiation window that teams have with their own free agents.
•Nov. 4: Deadline for players with opt-out clauses to exercise those provisions.
•Nov. 6: The deadline for MLB clubs to formally issue one-year qualifying offers (valued at $17.4MM this offseason, as reported by MLBTR) to free agents is 5:00pm ET. Those players will have 10 days to weigh the offers and can negotiate with other clubs during that 10-day window. After that 5pm deadline, all free agents are eligible to begin negotiating with other teams.
•Nov. 13-16: General Managers’ meetings take place in Orlando, Fla.
•Nov. 20: Deadline for teams to set their 40-man rosters in advance of the Rule 5 Draft.

Uh, what about Justin Upton and his extension from the Angels? Angels Extend Justin Upton
I suggest you read MLBTRs daily. You might learn something.

Sorry Possum.
So, you think it is accurate to make predictions for the 2018 season the day after the 2017 World Series?
Who did Jayson Werth sign with? Did the Cubs extend Lackey and Arrieta? Did Sabathia retire or is he coming back? Did the Royals sign Hosmer, Cain and Moustakas? Where did Todd Frazier go? Was McCutchen's option picked up?
I have learned over the years that most moves don't happen the day after the World Series. I am willing to bet more moves will be coming than just the Upton extension. But I do apologize for being too vague and incorrect.

Why yes I do Dog. In fact I predict that the Buccos will win the WS in 4 over the vaunted Detroit Tigers.
In fact newly acquired Bucco RF Giancarlo Stanton will win the triple crown and be named NL MVP as well as win a Gold Glove. Bucs will sign their previous playoff nemesis Jake Arrieta and Madison Baumgartener who will battle all season long for the NL Cy Young award with each winning 20 games
These will be the hightlights of the Buccos incredible season in which Nutting will say to heck with the payroll restrictions I want to win the whole shebang now and in the near future. So he will let out all stops with the money.
Hows that for predicting the 2018 season just 2 days after the World Series. I needed the extra day to make sure I go things correctly.

But what's the 3B market like this offseason? It seems like Moustakas and then everyone else, and I don't know--is he a little overrated right now because he's the only fish in the sea?
Are there decent trade options at third?

Possum, you forgot to add that Kang will hit 30 HRs and Cervelli will set a record for catching all 162 games.

I don't see much, tbh. Ironically, I think our best option might be to bride the state department into letting Kang back into the country. And even then, I'm not at all convinced he can be a competent Major Leaguer anymore.

Thanks Bobster I did forget those two guys. Actually I think Kang will hit 40 or so Ks and have a 1.000 Fielding % at the hot corner. As for Cervelli I think he will make it into 164 games, he will find a couple extra games somewhere. Maybe in some sandlot game on an off day.
