I doubt that DJ has a ton of money invested in the Marlins. He brought a few guys together and they liked his name recognition and ethnicity in FL and he got named head of the management team.

What DJs group paid so much for a team that has had attendance problems for sooooooooo long even when they had some decent players and close to winning teams.

Goes to show you that if a bunch of guys would ask say, Andy Van Slyke or Doug Drabek to be the head figure of a group to by the Pirates from McNutting the Cheap, that there would be no guarantee that they would keep the club in tact and invest in a win now attitude.

Seems that there is no loyalty and love for the game as there was when I was a kid and young adult too many years ago to mention. Now it is pretty much grab the money and run for all but a few teams.

Well, DJ was an idiot to overpay for the franchise in the first place and now he has to purge the roster. Stanton is only the first big piece to be moved.  I know Gordon went first.  I'm sure two more pieces will be going.  Overspend for the franchise and break it down to bare bones again.  Marlins has the third worst attendance figure last year and that was with Stanton and Gordon and Yelich and Osuna on the roster.

Jeter may be the face of the franchise, but he is not the primary investor. He paid about twenty five million for four percent.

The big problem is that the new ownership group assumed $400 million of old Marlins debt racked up under the loathsome Jeffery Loria.

The question I have is how/why MLB allowed Loria to get that deep in the hole?

I'd say be careful what you wish for to people who want a big celebrity to swoop in and buy their favorite sports team

That franchise was a mess under Loria. The contracts ... the debt and the lack of interest. If I would have been the group buying this, I would have demanded before purchase, Loria's crew makes the deals of Stanton and Gordon.

I would love someone famous to buy the Bucs. We know the franchise isn't in financial turmoil since our owner is cheap.

Pretty scathing by Jeff Passan towards basically anything marlins-related.

Along the way, even as the Marlins lost, they could have built up goodwill through their treatment of people, their commitment to becoming a first-class organization. Instead, they are the team that calls a scout to tell him his contract won’t be renewed as he’s lying in a hospital after cancer surgery. They are the team that lets go of well-liked ambassadors and popular announcers with a connection to the fan base. They bungle the easy stuff, which makes their handling of Stanton’s situation no surprise. They have taken on the herculean task of making Loria look OK by comparison with impressive aplomb.

yet still we hear about how it is a "smart" move by the marlins?  Yeah, ok.

If you thought Lori's' franchise was a mess, why would you want them to make trades for you before you bought the team?

Because under Loria's direction, they were the idiots that signed off on that Stanton deal. I would have said, I will give you XXX for the franchise, but you have to be the bad guy and deal Stanton and XXX. I'm pretty sure Jeter doesn't like having to give the 30 million to the Yanks in that deal. Jeter comes across as the bad guy for dealing the best player in the NL, the only reason to attend Marlins games

That's kind of strange to me.  You want the bad ownership group to trade your assets away before you buy so people don't think you are the bad guy?  If I bought a team, I would want my people to make any deals going forward, not the failed ownership before me.

Jeter and company messed up big time by agreeing to deals with teams Stanton wouldn't play for due to his contract.  That was a huge mistake and now they ended up with a salary dump.

Jeter tried to make previous management take the fall when he had Loria's president, David Samson, fire their special assistants/goodwill ambassadors.

He didn't fool anyone.
