As it was, I was going to watch to see Anderson's inability to hold runners at bay, and for Perez's ongoing inability to add any value behind the plate in trying to control a running game.
Seems like another trying day all around.
2 outs. Contreras at second after stealing without a throw. Baez hits a grounder to Gonzalez, throws across but Craig came off the bag on the throw. Baez stopped running, and headed back towards home plate. Craig started chasing him slowly, but got closer and closer to home. Contreras never stopped running. Craig panicked and threw to Perez, who went to tag Contreras, who was called safe.
However, Baez had still not even gotten to first, and started to run that way, and no one was covering. Perez's throw was wide of Frazier, and the ball trickled into the outfield, and Baez ended up reaching second base. A flare lands, and makes it 3-0 as Baez scores.
The thing is....even after Contreras slid in and was called safe, all they had to do was either tag Baez or get him out on the throw to first, and the run never counted.
Craig never needed to throw the ball, which was from about 5 feet and a shot put kind of thing. He just needed to just tag Baez, because it's a force out on the third out and the run doesn't count.
Just plain absolutely stupid, putrid baseball
At that point, Craig needed to turn around and walk calmly, responsibly and like a reasonably intelligent adult to 1B while Baez was running back to the plate. A first baseman should understand how to get a runner out of 1B while he has the ball in his glove and the batter is running in the wrong direction. Shelton's ST lessons on fundamentals must have skipped that.
Remember he was taught by a Pittsburgh Pirate development team!
