I'm not suggesting they play every game for the season.  I'm suggesting they play every game until some of their injured guys (like Freese and Frazier) and perhaps Marte get back.  If they find that frustrating, call Bradenton or South Korea and vent.

Once Marte and Kang come back, then you rest players?

The point is to rest players so they are fresh at the end of the year.  Why do you want the best players missing 20+ games in July, August and September?  Anyone know the average of games played per player?

McCutchen probably still plays more than most players in the league.  He only misses about 10 games a season, I think.

Looking at his history, he is usually good for around 157.  That's only about one game off a month.

I don't want them missing games period.  I don't necessarily buy into the whole rest thing for baseball.  Playing a game vs. not playing a game doesn't make that big of a difference, IMO.  This isn't hockey or basketball where they are running for 60 minutes or getting hit.  They are doing all of the traveling and warmups whether they are playing or not.  Just go play.

If they do need to take rests, I say no rest days now while half of the starting line up is gone.  When we are closer to our full roster, resume the days off in necessary.  I wouldn't "make up" the days off, but proceed as planned from that point forward.

Last night's game was a good one to give players half a game off and there will be a few more games like that this season I'm sure.

Thanks for posting.

I have to say that so far I hate the changes to format of Baseball Reference. I found it much easier to use before the "upgrade"

I don't know if your goal is to prove me wrong for a "gotcha" moment or what. But your example of the 1971 Bucs is a poor one for this discussion. There was too much platooning and sharing of positions on that talented team for anyone to get close to 162 games. The Bucs also played 9 doubleheaders that year (not the day/night variety) and it was customary to give some guys off in one game or the other.

C- Sangy started most games but no catcher catches them all.

1B-Robertson started most games but Oliver played 1B against a lot of RHP.

2B-In addition to Cash, Stennett started a lot at 2B and Maz was still starting some.

3B-Hebner and Pagan shared 3B.

SS-Alley was hurt a lot so Hernandez often started.

LF-Stargell played when healthy. But yes, he got an occasional day off.

CF-Oliver and Clines shared CF.

RF-Clemente was 36, sometimes hurt or got a day off.

Obviously a team that deep that shared positions will not have players starting everyday. That doesn't mean other teams didn't. Here are the top 10 in each league in games played.

1. Alomar • CAL 162

2. Schaal • KCR 161

3. McMullen • CAL 160

4. Brinkman • DET 159

Clarke • NYY 159

Smith • BOS 159

7. Nettles • CLE 158

Petrocelli • BOS 158

9. Tovar • MIN 157

10. Robinson • BAL 156

1. Staub • MON 162

2. Cedeno • HOU 161

Torre • STL 161

4. Morgan • HOU 160

Rose • CIN 160

6. Bowa • PHI 159

7. Davis • LAD 158

Montanez • PHI 158

Perez • CIN 158

Johnson • PHI 158

So two guys played 162 in that year?

Three guys played 162 in 2016

And 9 played 160 or more

How do we interpret this data?
