I saw that too. Though that rumor came from a guy at the NY Post...the official mouthpiece for the Yankees. I don't believe anything coming from that source.

Though I wouldn't be shocked. Lately the Yankees only seem to want to do a trade if they're getting something for free. Screw 'em.

If the market is so tight, try to win until July 31st at least. You know, try to fill the stands get some excitement going?
This is the Pirates. They aren't signing anyone significant, or of Todd Frazier's ilk if they can't deal off Cole, Harrison, and Cutch. You know better than this.

Signing a player or trading for a player to trade them later isn't a good plan either. We should be past the era of getting guys to trade. That thinking needs to go away.
That thinking was never here, imo. We just dabbled in scrubs for 15 years with a couple of exceptions..
The thinking that needs to go away is the " we can lose without him" mentality that requires rock solid, signed in blood guarantees that picking up a player will get us a pennant and if it doesn't, there's little point and we should horde more "prospects"

I'll never accept the loser mentality and defeatism of this organization, even if I know playing to win is highly unlikely.

I don't think the organization sees it as a "loser mentality and defeatism." I think they see it as trying to put together a winning team while restricting themselves to a very low payroll. And that's the problem. They are continually in the "maybe we can get lucky with this guy" mode. Of course it's nonsense. But that is the front office the fans are counting on to produce a winner. Ain't gonna happen.

I'll do you one better: sign Markakis. Cleanup hitter and 3rd base problem solved! I still think he can be had for 3 years/50m.

I'm not sure what a multiyear deal would look like for Moustakas but I wouldn't be opposed to offering a bigger 1 year deal. There's been some rumbling that some of these guys would take a 1 year deal and hope for something bigger next year. What would they have to lose(Pirates). Pick him up put him in the 4 spot and see what happens until the AS break.

There were rumors about the Yankees doing this, offering a lot for a one year deal so they can go after Machado next year. Jose Bautista did this last year.
Players have to start to be getting desperate. How are they living their lives, every day lives, with no contract? Players get hurt in the off season all the time playing basketball (recreational sports in general), lifting weights, using stairs, car accidents, etc.
If it is some mind game, I think the Owners are winning.

There have been accusations of collusion, but one article basically said that teams are just being realistic in regards to their chances this coming offseason. There aren't a lot of divisions seemingly up in the air.
