In the meantime, there are no names under consideration by the Pirates for an offensive upgrade at any position.
There's another issue at play here as well. It's the Pirates reputation, which has become well-earned, of not being serious about wanting to win. As we all know, the Pirates can afford a $10 million salary, and even more. But what player would choose to play for the Pirates when he could go to the always-serious Phillies? To me it was a bad sign that the Bucs didn't try to resign Chapman. He did as well or even better than expected in 2024. What is the plan for his salary money? Is it just going to be used to pay for raises for current players? Also acquiring Spencer Horwitz, do the Bucs think he is really going to be a good hitter? Or were they willing to pay (and possibly overpay) to get someone on a cheap contract?
