For those of you who are unsatisfied with Hurdle, there's a good chance (I would think) that Madden of the Cubs will be available soon. I was just watching the end of the Cubs - Milwaukee game on MLB Network and noticed (because the announcers mentioned it) that Madden used his closer in the 9th *when his team was behind by a run.* (By behind, I mean the other guys had more runs; that is, they were ahead). Well, this sort of clear violation of the Closer Rule is almost certain to get him canned, wouldn't you think?

Putting pressure on the defense!

Right.  I was hoping for a throw into CF since that is what Molina is known for.

Real smart guys I'm real impressed by your baseball knowledge, that's a reaction play with a split second to make a decision.  As for Jaso that was just a bone head play even the Cardinal announcers were scratching there heads why he would run on a ball hit with no chance of falling in.  I was always taught to make sure the ball getting down before you take off running while on base.

I noticed again today Matheney hit and ran today with the lead, but our guy nope can't do it we got our one run. Even with Mercer up and our fastest runner on 2 out in the ninth he doesn't put the hit and run on our try and steal, we were looking for 2 big hits there or a dinger I guess, there was absolutely no chance either was going to happen.

This is just a terribly broken team right now. Pitching is flat out outstanding, every other part of the game is really bad.

I think we're last in MLB in:

Power

caught stealing

average with RISP.

A lot of the running mistakes are just awful plays. But I gotta go with Skinny on this (generally, not any specific play) - I'm utilizing my team speed best I can. A point I made earlier that I'll make again - I get that stealing 2nd is of no value if you can't drive a RISP in. But in the right circumstance, maybe once or twice a game, I would not hesitate to combine a bunt and a steal to get a runner to 3rd. That would put a SF into play.

Gotta do something....

Problem is; we have no one on the team that is prolific at bunting.

Taillon and Cole maybe; but no position players have shown bunting skills.

So, you are willing to give away outs for a team that is not hitting? They aren't scoring in 27 outs. You want to take more outs away?

No, that's the point. I don't want to give away outs; I don't like the bunt, generally, on this team. I'd rather run then give away the out.

But I did say, and have no problem, with combining a bunt and a steal to try to get to 3rd with less then 2 outs. Particularly I'd like to see double steals. Anything to try to help this team score a couple more runs.

You have to assume that when you are bunting, it is a sacrifice and an out will occur, right?

Even if you steal second and then bunt them to third, you are giving away an out. At least you are willing to give away an out.

But unless you are successful in stealing >=70% of the time than you are doing yourself more harm than good.  I think we'd cost ourselves runs because I don't think we would have a very good success rate stealing bases. Playing for the one-run inning might be good situationally but I wouldn't want to make a living out of it.
