Brewers (of all teams to be watching) lose the 1st of a double header.  Pirates are somehow only 3.5 back.

How big is the series with the O's?  Take back those two blown games and we're only 1.5 back.
That's 100% on Hurdle, just plan and simple the guy should have been fired on the spot after the 2nd loss to Baltimore. The definition of incompetance.

Funny how BP is a little easier to mange when your closer is not giving up 2 run HR's ?

Seems like we found #22...

Couldn't get on last night, but Taillon came back to dominate in about a month like I predicted...

Also, we're guaranteed the biggest upgrade of any team in the Central in July...and we don't give up anything to get Marte back...

Finally, after the dumpster fire this season has been, especially those two games in Baltimore followed by the first two against the fish...we're only 3.5 back!

Just a note about Frazier's play last night.

Twitter tore Frazier up last night for his soft throw into Mercer last night.

I do think it was a lollipop throw, but I don't feel there was laziness or incompetence in the field by Frazier, just a nonchalant attitude.

I don't think this makes him a bad player or one who doesn't care. I just think he did what any other player would and it bit him in the arse. It was a great read by Stu Cole and Story made a great slide.

In short, he made a three second bonehead play and I hope it doesn't get in his head.

I agree completely. And more, I bet just about anything that he'll NEVER have that happen again. A learning experience is always good unless you don't learn from it. We've had a few players that repeat the same mistakes over and over.

Mario Lemeuix is the greatest Pittsburgh sport figure of all time. It also took him ten years to win the Stanley Cup. I would never take away anything Mario has done for hockey or the city of Pittsburgh. I certainly wouldn't rip another city's team in order to praise another either.

It's an exciting night for the Pirates and their fans to see the Stanley Cup. Yet, some have to make it a negative thing. I find that sad.

Well, you be sad over a fan who "rips" the owner.  I'll be sad for fans who will never see a Pennant much less a WS because the owner doesn't care.

So we're both sad.  Your sad because I questioned the motives of a billionaire owner.  Im sad for the fans who the owner cares nothing about.

Just two sad pirate fans going in totally different directions...

Great win for the Bucs tonight!

Now let me turn my attention to one of my favorite subjects: Nutting Bashing.

I agree 110% with VA. It is simply disgraceful that Nutting was not there to honor the Pens.

I know why he was not there. Because he would have received the same reception that Commissioner Bettman receives when he shows up to present the Cup.

Nutting will do what cowards do and hide during times of adversity. He only shows his face when things are positive.

Anyway it was great to see Cole get back on track so that we can get a haul from the Yanks or Astros at the trade deadline.

With respect to Frazier's approach to the fly ball single and his throw back to the infield ---

1) Story should not have been able to score on that play. Heads up hustling by Story and the decision of the Rockies 3rd base coach to waive him home (coach saw what was happening and reacted) are the key reasons why Story scored.

2) Frazier assumed that Story would pull up at 3rd (as most runners would have and as most coaches would have had him do).. In short, he anticipated how a play would typically unfold but did not recognize what was actually happening. Story was flying and ready to turn the base at second by the time Frazier even got close to the ball.

3) Frazier should have recognized what was happening. That said, he is still relatively new to the outfield at the major league level and I hope, as stated below, that he learns from this experience so that it doesn't happen again.

4) A problem I have is that I believe this type of play appears to be common for Pirate outfielders. Polanco often lazily throws a ball back to the infield, and was burned earlier this year by someone who took 3rd on him. Cutch, who has a poor arm to begin with, doesn't charge hard enough on a ball to the outfield and runners look at taking the extra base. Marte can make unbelievable plays, but then non-chalants a play or throw.

Fortunately, the Pirates scored 7 runs last night. But, when this play happened, it was a 1-1 game. This also is the type of play that Cole has seemed to let get into his head in the past. Glad it didn't happen last night.

This is something that Hurdle and the outfield coach should be addressing.  I don't care what your paycheck is, if you make that kind of lazy mistake you should be out their extra the next day shagging flies and throwing lasers to second base.  That reinforces what you did wrong and also gets you some extra practice throwing.

Mercer didn't receive the ball like there was going to be a play at the plate.

Frazier got the ball into second assuming Story wouldn't run. Mercer received the ball thinking the same thing.

It was a heads up play by the Rockies, but they won't get away with it again any time soon. Story was great by running hard the whole time.
