I wonder if any team will want to acquire Watson later this season, or can he fetch a decent return in a trade. His season is very up and down.

There will be pretty much a zero return. He's just a decent BP arm .

Watson will probably bring back another bullpen arm. He is pitching really bad. I think he has had some bad luck with little dribblers getting through, but they are being followed by major hit.

But he got the Win!

If they switch him and Rivero now, there's a possibility both of their trade values could improve by the deadline. 2 months of ball is a lot

the question is whether the Bucs would be willing to deal Rivero this season though. If his value increases a lot because of getting saves he will end up with a bigger salary next year. He is most likely a super 2 player and will be eligible for arbitration.

If he is traded I doubt very much it's for salary reasons. The arb would be his first time through and the Pirates would only pay a fraction of his fair market value. Two or three years from now money might be the issue. The bigger reason would be the prospects he could garner. Right now he's getting a lot of favorable buzz. If that doesn't change, it would result in some good offers in July. The Pirates have traded relief pitchers before. There is no more unpredictable nor replaceable commodity in baseball than the relief pitcher. A good offer should be given very serious thought. If there is one area where the Pirates have an excess, it's AAA pitchers. Of course that means we wouldn't have him for the future, but remember two years ago how we felt about Watson. Now we wonder if we could get anything for him. So maybe a trade makes some sense after all.

I agree the salary won't make that big of a deal for at least next year. He is likely to go up to a million maybe 2 if he earns a lot of saves and shows teams he can be a closer. That could make him very valuable to contenders.

Still the combination of saving a million bucks and getting a great return (should be more than they got for Mark M). may make him available.
