I would have went with Rivero. Rivero can go two if he paced himself if need be.

OK, Hurdle is trying to lose. He had 1 bench player left-Moroff. So he needlessly puts him in the field. He declares Rivero "unavailable." Why? Because he needlessly used him for a 2nd straight day yesterday when they had a 3-run lead in the 9th but all that mattered was that Rivero pick up a save stat. And since Rivero won't pitch, he puts in his worst pitcher-Benoit. This year, Hurdle is adding his name to the McClendon-Tracy-Russell hall of shame.

Mercer had an easy force at 2B but threw to 1B. Did he think there were 2 outs?

He could have tagged the runner too. I don't get that. Mercer is a smart player too. Didn't he mess up last week too?

Benoit's new strategy is to walk anyone he thinks is a good hitter.

Now I get it. Mercer knew Benoit would walk his 3rd batter of the inning so it didn't matter anyway. So apparently Hurdle has decided to rest all of Rivero, Kontos, and Neverauskas tonight. As usual, rest takes priority over winning. If we can't get excited about winning games, we can at least revel in how much money Nutting makes and how much rest the Pirate players get. I pity the poor NL Central team that has to play post season games while the Pirates get to take naps.

and on a short bullpen night, take out Schugel after 8 pitches and Nicasio after 11. Hopefully Pirates score so we don't need to see multiple innings from Benoit.
