The minors have few players to get excited about. Need to reload with the trades of Cutch and Cole in the off season for starters and trade Marte buy next summer..You start from there .A big need  is a 3b for sure .We need bats all around..i dont care if the defense is subpar. Bats will put fans in the seats.

Austin Meadows' slow development really impacts any rebuild. I thought he was a can't miss prospect. the devaluation of most assets on this team is another problem - Marte, Polanco, Cervelli, Cole, Nova - I don't think there is nearly as much value as at the beginning of the season.

Cutch is probably up a bit. JHay and Bell are the most valuable assets, but they're the two I would not trade off the ML team.

The organization is a mess right now. I think they could be good next year but it will take a material influx of cash to improve. I was a huge proponent of rebuilding, but that's when Marte, Polanco and Cole had huge values and Meadows was a "can't miss".

Now, I think a rebuild is a VERY long process.

I would think a trade of JHay is a real possibility. Salaries of the guys who have been around a bit are going to go up. I don't know what his contract calls for next year, but it has to be a lot more than one of the many middle infielders floating around at the AAA level. I can see that move being made.

Salaries like these destroy financial flexibility. I bet Jay Hay sprinted to sign this contract.

J-Hay's contract is increasing by 2.5 million next year.  it's not that much of a hit and he's basically right on his value.

I don't disagree that he's a likely trade candidate because he's 1) productive 2bman at a position where there's not alot of production 2) not vastly outperforming his contract $, which is the first thing we look for when trying to trade a player.

Half of Bastardo's (Niese's) wasted salary that's coming off covers JHays increase.

Edit:

Cutch is going up by $750k, all but $200 of which was just covered by dumping Nicasio right? RIGHT? that will be counted towards payroll next year when we have the OBN salary discussions RIGHT?

Since Nutting isn't just increasing his margins "pocketing the money" it will count towards next years increases...Of course money saved / Financial flexibilty in one season has NEVER been clearly applied to the following years payrolls, but it's going to happen this time!

J-Hay earns and deserves every penny of that contract. No way is he overpaid

He isn't over paid as far as most MLB teams are concerned. But he will take up about 10% of the Pirates payroll and I doubt if Nutting or NH like that.

Somewhere Nutting is saying to himself, "If he nine and a half million dollars better than Moroff?" I'm just guessing the answer will be 'no.'
