The 1988 Orioles fired Cal Ripken Sr as manager when they lost the first 6 games of the season. They replaced him with Frank Robinson who lost the next 15 games for an 0-21 start to the season. Ripken had taken over the team a year earlier and 1988 was supposed to be a rebuilding year. So it made no sense to fire him after 6 games in 1988. It seemed like they just wanted Robinson and looked for any excuse to fire Ripken. Things didn't get much better after the 0-21 start. They went 54-86 the rest of the way.

It's funny that they waited until the Sox finally won a game to fire him. He probably wishing they had kept on losing. At least he had a job then.
