The book may be out on Hughes, lay off the low pitches and make him come up in the zone.  But he still had a solid GB%, so if he could fill that role he did in 2015, he's a huge bargain.

Being a GB guy is tricky. You can come and and be completely effective and blow the game open. All it takes is two ground balls through the hole and a soft liner and you've given up a handful of runs. I felt like that happened to Hughes more this past year than in 2015. In 2015, it seemed like every time he came in, he'd get a GB right at an infielder.

I assume Mercer will be signed today.  He has to be the biggest arbitration case for the Pirates.

4M for Jordy.

Cole, Watson, and Nicasio are left.

I guess the Pirates/Mercer couldn't agree on an extension?

Truly a relief that we avoided arbitration with a guy that hopefully is our sixth starter.

According to the Trib Cole and Bucs have agreed on a contract rather than going through the arbitration process. 3.75 million for this season. Nicasio has also agreed to a 3.625 million contract.  No word yet on Watson.

Ha, what kind of world are we living in where Juan Nicasio and Cole are worth almost the same amount of money? :D

This is why it is crazy to me that Cole won't sign an extension. he could probably get $8 million this year and that doubled in three-four years.

It is crazy how tenure means so much in baseball.

Cole wants to hit the free market as fast as he can.

Even though tenure counts, it would have been even higher if he would have reversed his last two seasons. Manny Machado is getting 11.5 and Hosmer over 12 million.
