Lot of different ways to do it.  That would have been easiest

And his 5.40 ERA? Nah, pass.

I think his game would benefit and the team itself would get an extra year at the end when he's likely to be coming into his prime years. He has nothing left to prove in AAA and I think whatever problems he does have he needs to work out at the Big League level.

He doesn't have a strong third pitch yet and couldn't hold runners on base. He averaged five walks per nine innings last year in the minors.

I think he has many things to prove in Triple A.

How can a pitcher with control problems, difficulty holding runners and working on a new pitch have nothing to prove in AAA? Th Pirates' only decent chance is to win a dogfight with 4-5 other teams for a WC spot. Until Glasnow has mastered what he needs to work on, they can't be losing games just so he can work those things out at the big league level and then come up short at the end in the WC race.

From the way the schedule looks for early April a fifth starter may not be needed right away. Could they start the season with 4 starters and 8 bull pen guys?

He's the exact kind of player that, had we signed away from another team during the offseason, we would declare to be an "excellent rebound candidate" and a smart pickup.

Liriano already had his rebound. If he won't let the coaches coach him, he wouldn't be a good candidate at all. It was time to move on.
