Marte just hit a three run homer for Indy. 2-4 with a BB.

Cole pitched well. I'm glad he didn't blow up against that umpire behind the plate. That ump was awful. Awful.

Harrison got a hit. Cole with the big hit to help himself.

Good win.

Yes, good win.

Now we need about 7 more in a row to make up for the 6-7 games we have THROWN AWAY over the last 6 weeks.

I don't get too excited anymore when this Pirates team wins 2 or maybe even 3 or 4 games in a row because I know that they simply won't sustain it. It's been the pattern all season long and why this team has consistently been 6-7 games under .500 for about the last 8 weeks or so.

The sense I have with Cole is that's he's still a thrower and not quite yet a pitcher. Because he can throw hard, he thinks that's his answer. When he gets in trouble he just tries to throw it yet harder. At some point he needs to ease back and become a little more deceptive in his approach.

Perhaps you should adjust your expectations. Cole isn't that level of pitcher.

but there is no middle ground!   either you're Kershaw or MadBum or you're a scrub who should be cast off into the wilderness.

guys who were supposed to be aces and pitch like 2s or 3s should be traded immediately, while guys who are supposed to be scrubs and may pitch like 4s or 5s should be collected like rare baseball cards.

At first glance, I thought it was mustard too.  To me cheese should have more of an orange tint than that stuff does.  I always thought that Cheeze Whiz stuff in the jar was gross, personally.  Anyway, why hate on the man for something so puny, especially when he and everyone else was making fun of him over the incident.  That stuff always annoys me anyway.  I want to watch baseball, not greasy sandwiches with too much bread and too little meat.  If they have enough time between pitches to show sandwiches then they really do need to speed up the game.

Well when your #1 usually pitches like a 4 or 5?

I feel that is what he did last year. This year he is throwing hard again. I want to see him hit 100mph a lot more like he did in this game.

That umpire was so bad. I was glad he kept his poise. That's his biggest issue. He can't overcome mistakes. He needs to learn how to move on from an error, or a good pitch that was hit, or a bad call.

The point is he's being unrealistically held to a #1 standard when he's not a# 1.

Let's try a little exercise. Which of the following numbers is not like the others:

111

99

149

107

98

Those are Cole's ERA+ for each season. Perhaps the 149 is the outlier and the other four are what we should expect from him. Perhaps.
