Rivero 41 pitches

I was thinking something was off and he should be pulled when was struggling with his first batter in the 9th.  At the very least, someone should have been up and warming after that first batter because Rivero never has to throw that many pitches to one batter.  That way when it was clear that something was off he could have been pulled right away instead of making him struggle and blow a save before someone was ready.

When we say that our coaches should "break the mold" and do things like four out saves more often, this is the other side of what can happen. It doesn't happen that often, mind you, but it can.

I thought maybe the pen should have been warming up earlier too, but I can imagine what we'd be talking about if we made a move in the ninth and the lead was blown by Benoit or The Rookie instead.

I agree with that but I do support bringing in the closer if needed in the 8th. If the game gets away in the 8th while Rivero sits and watches, it is a waste of the team's assets. Just not sure it was needed yesterday after a 2-out walk with a 2-run lead. But assuming there was a valid reason for a change at that time, it seems reasonable to warm up someone else just in case Rivero throws too many pitches in his 1+ inning outing.

As far as the possibility of someone else blowing the game in the 9th if Rivero is used earlier and can't finish, it's ultimately no different if that happens than if someone else blew the game in the 8th while Rivero waited around for a 9th inning save opp that never happened. My thinking is that you attack one problem at a time. If Rivero is the best option to avoid losing the game in the 8th (speaking hypothetically because and I'm not sure that was the case yesterday) then use him there and worry about the 9th in the 9th. It's not automatic that anyone else will blow the save if it's there in the 9th. But if they do, it's no worse than letting the game get away in the 8th while Rivero sits and watches. Bottom line, Rivero just had a rare bad game but they still won. Elroy Face went 18-1 in relief in 1959. But nobody lost sleep over the "1." :)

Yeah, we'll keep him around. :D

I wonder how long he'll be down though.
