He did to Martin and Liriano.

But those two contracts would not have broken the bank like an offer to Cole and McCutchen in 2018. Nutting McCheap is just that too cheap to invest some of his profits in making the team better so the fans can support his team and thus him. You gotta spend money to make money.

So, he wasn't afraid going into 2015 but he is afraid this year? Why would the qualifying offer break the bank for 2018 and not for 2015?

There's no chance Liriano or Martin would have taken it, but it did successfully increase the leverage we had to resign them, by costing a competitor a draft pick if they were a top 15 team. A second round pick if they weren't.

Smart thing to do.  Supposedly we almost re-signed Martin too

Since Cutch and Cole aren't free agents, I don't think it matters if we would or would QO him.

Supposedly we DIDNT make AJ a QO,  which was an incredibly dumb thing to do... Then we supposedly ended up offering him 10 anyway trying to sign him over the Phillies.   ($12 was QO)

Just sheer stupidity the way that was handled.  But the amateur hour mistakes NH makes are usually just ignored or disputed or said to be no big deal.

I remember that one being AJ was a jerk for saying Pirates or retire...and then we offered him 8 million dollars (about 60% of market, as it turned out)  and were surprised it pizzed him off!  Haha

"Hey boss, I love it here.  Im thinking about retiring but I don't want to play anywhere else, that's for sure.

Boss: "great we love you too!  So you're going to need to o work for us at 50% of your current pay, next year."

what an embarrassing circus of apologism that was, defending that mess
