Sadly, I think both are on the roster ... the GM thinks we can compete and fails to add good players, thus wasting both of them.
The deal Florida made was embarrassing. Total salary dump.

Pittsburgh wouldn't take that deal. Not a chance.

I think both will be gone by the deadline.

Show's that the field is far from level in baseball. Yanks get Stanton and 30 some million (1/3 of the Pirate yearly players salary) for Castro and a couple prospects. Sorry but I blame the owners and players both for this unfairness.

Yes, but it's a dump of nearly 300 million. And it was always assumed they would trade him before the 25+ million years in the contract kicked in. The problem is finding a team willing to take on such a financial commitment. Marlins couldn't expect to get as boatload of talent in addition to unloading that contract. In today's mega million MLB, financial compensation is just as important, if not more so, than talent compensation and is factored into every trade.

You need to dump them like now, if you want to maximize their trade value. Someone will overpay for Cole. Cutch, you can't keep until the deadline. If he plays like he has the last two years, absent a very hot 2.5 months in 2017, his value is greatly reduced. The only reason you should keep them is if you are going to make a serious attempt to win by ADDING GOOD players not garbage. That ain't happening.

Huge win for the marlins. They successfully controlled one of the best hitters in baseball for years as a "small market" and then traded him for something.
They didn't "mortgage the future" and ruin themselves as an organization for years, I was guaranteed they were doing. Sure, they didn't do anything else well and didn't add around him, but the Stanton contract was a success for them.
They retained the otherwise unretainable by offering him a "dumb, ridiculous, silly, scary" contract.
I recall analysts praising the Marlins for that contract when it was given because it was backloaded and it was anticipated Miami when trade him before the big money kicked in. That's exactly what they did. He got 6.5 mil in 2014 and 2015, 9 mil in 2016 and 14.5 mil in 2017. Beginning 2018 he gets 25, 26, 26, 29, 29, 32, 32, 32, 29, and 25 mil with a 10 million buyout the following year at age 38. Marlins had him for 7 years thru age 27. NY now has to pay him for 11 years at 25+ mil at ages 28-38. Furthermore, the Marlins have finished under .500 in all 7 of Stanton's seasons with them including 3 last place finishes. As Branch Rickey said of Ralph Kiner: they finished last with him, they could finish last without him.
Frank Connelly got in trouble for relaying that same message. Connelly ended up right.
I don't think the Marlins benefitted from that deal at all. They didn't win and it is reported the return of players will not be close in value.

The only way this contract helped the Marlins is if they retained enough of the cash obligation to make this a real baseball move. If the Marlins kept $10M a year, they probably could have turned Stanton into an entirely new team with a bright future.
Instead they have nothing.
This was a rotten move by the Marlins, a huge gift to the Yankees who can afford the contract; and rotten for the rest of MLB.
I bet the Fish average less than 10,000 per game next year. This deal would leave me bitter if I was a fan.

Regarding the poll: Cutch and Cole remain Pirates.

What about it is good for the marlins? Or for any team not in one of the big three markets? They gave away a hall of famer for free. You're saying it's a win because they had to do it now instead of three years ago.
