While I am losing some of my last vestiges of hope (and caring), I've got to believe that this team is going to sell and retool.
As such, trade Cervelli. Aim for a young A level prospect with an upside and the attendant salary relief in return.
I don't know if Diaz can be an everyday catcher, but it is past time to find out. And please, no Stewart as a back-up; even though he meets the prime directive of being very low cost (read cheap).

Just because you label pitchers and think Cole isn't very good doesn't mean this board or rest of baseball agrees with you. I thought you recanted your words after that article on what the Yankees might trade for him?
So, we need to keep a non productive expensive catcher that has fragility issues?
I recanted saying we don't need Wade in that idea. We don't need another light hitting middle infielder. Read it again.
Teams have rotations. They label each pitcher with a number. Cole happens to be our default number one since we don't have anything close to the rotation that good teams do. He wouldn't be in the top 2 of quite a few teams. You overrate him. But, hey, if some idiot GM wants to overspend, I will gladly take it. I never said he sucked. Most of this board sees his flaws, things you gloss over.
I mean ... 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA and giving up 31 bombs isn't great.

This thread is about Cervelli not your relative Gerritt. Very deep thought Dog, as usual. Again, you grossly overrate Cole. He is the supposed ace of this staff. On good teams, he is a 3 or a 4. He is a 4 or 5 in LA. If some idiot GM wants to pony up prospects for an enigma on the mound, he needs to be moved. You keep saying we have these "options" as far as starters, so ...
This guys appears to agree with dog (bold is mine)...
Industry evaluators convinced the Pirates are prepared to move Gerrit Cole, if they can find the right match. Arguably best available starting pitcher in the market.

Those industry elevators must have totally forgot the 2017 season and are living in the past - like three or four years ago.

It's his career, but I actually think Cervelli should consider retirement. Three trips to the DL because of concussions in the last two seasons? All of that damage is cumulative.

Cole is a good pitcher. He obviously has the potential to be great, as we saw in 2015, and as we saw in spurts last year. Cheap, plus two years of control, means teams would probably be willing to deal. Look...we're obviously not going to get a Moancada type return, but some team will deal for him.
As for Cervelli, I truly believe that Diaz is the best catcher on the roster anyway, so certainly I want to move Cervelli. Cervelli seems to be a great guy and a great teammate. But, for the production he offers, coupled with the time spent on the DL, I think it's time to move on independent of whatever is done with Cole.
Why can't the Pirates be like the Astros? Alvarez, Cole, and to some extent Taillon have all been disappointments. Correa, Bregman, Springer, McCullers, Keuchel...Astros didn't miss with their draft picks.

Would you trade him knowing that you will not get much for him?
I think if we are trying to add the legit pieces everyone can see we need, then no. You hold him to try to scrape together a push this season. Hope he can toughen up and play through his bruises.
If Cole gets traded, everyone can go. See ya in a few years buccos chances at anything meaningful

It's not just bruises, its concussions. And you can't toughen up for those.

I like Cervelli but he makes too much money (for the Pirates, that is) for a guy who misses so much time with injuries. I think he's untradable but if someone offers something reasonable for him, they should take it.

Again, do you trust this GM and this FO to reinvest the money saved for Cervelli and put it toward bringing in good talent? I don't. That said, I'ma ll for dealing Cervelli. He is easily replaceable.

I have no idea. The bottom line for the Pirates is whatever minimal payroll Nutting tells them to subsist on. I don't kid myself that whatever they save on Player A will be spent on Player B. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, I'm not surprised. Every day, Pirate fans see moves that contending teams make to improve and wonder why the Pirates don't make similar moves. To avoid driving yourself crazy, we need to realize that the Pirates don't operate in that universe. While other contenders go shopping for players at Sach's 5th Avenue, the Pirates look for bargains at Wal Mart. I don't like it but that's just how it is.
