Good job by Contreras. He only has 12 games (54.1 IP) at AA and only 3.2 innings at AAA. But he wasn't overmatched, looked confident and challenged hitters.

Sheez - lifted for a pinch hitter in the 3rd.

Line =

46 pitches

29 strikes 17 balls

3 hits (one hard hit ball)

1 walk

4 SO

Most impressive

1st inning, working out of 2 lead off hits

2nd inning, opened with 6 straight balls

3rd inning, gave up a 1 out double.

No runners advanced.

I expected he would go one more inning. I would have liked to see that. But a really good performance.

He’s not only young, he doesn’t have many starts in AA or AAA.

Agree with you: not over matched, he was confident. Challenged hitters. Very positive first start!

They said before the game that they only wanted him to pitch a few innings. It was an opportunity to give him a taste of pitching at this level and he left with confidence. I would have preferred he went another inning or two but I think they had a plan and they stuck to it.

I enjoyed listening to Neal Walker talk about how difficult it is on

the infielders having to adjust to all the shifts that are used today.

Cub SS just missed the bag-does that look familiar?

And it makes sense.

I was thinking 60 pitches, so one more inning. I think he showed up REALLY well. But did the short leash cause him to pitch more aggressively? He was ranging between high 90s to high 70s. Did the short start aid in his velocity?

But it does make sense.

Why not have him pitch to Stallings instead of Perez.  Time to help a pitcher out in his first major league game.

After being out for a week, it’s inexcusable that Stallings isn’t starting, especially tonight. Shelton is remarkably bad at this managing thing.
