First step should always be back until you pick up the ball.

That's just wrong, Dog. First of all, you pick up the ball off the bat. You don't stand in the OF taking a step back and wondering where it is until you locate it. If the ball is hit to one side or the other of you, you go laterally as soon as the ball is hit. If you've already taken a step back you probably won't catch up to it. If it's hit toward you, you move in or move out immediately depending on the trajectory. If you take a step back on a ball that's going to land in front of you, you probably aren't going to get to it in time to catch it. Polanco misjudged the ball off the bat and then circled instead of running straight for it. There's no way to put a positive spin on that. We know he's weak defensively. This was just one of those times he blew it.

Nope, first step is always back, behind you. Never in my life have I heard you step forward or up. Never. It's easier to run up than back.

The video is specifically about going back on balls. It's not about balls hit in front of you. The "Play Ball reference says "An outfielder's movement should always be in the direction of where the ball is going to land, or in the direction that will allow the fielder the best possible angle for a throw to the infield.

Coming in on Balls:On balls hit in front of the outfielder, he should break hard towards the infield." But it says to take the first step back "When in doubt."

No one said you should take a step in automatically, so of course you never heard that. Neither did I. The first ref you posted is for beginners and advises them to take a step back in case you misread it so it only drops in for a single. Polanco sure misread it. But he's not a beginner. I played OF for nearly 40 years. Maybe I was just good at judging the ball off the bat. I just went to where the ball was hit. I didn't begin with a step back and then try to figure it out. And I was certainly no MLB outfielder.

Very disappointing loss.  Hard to feel good about where the Pirates are at right now, even though the Cubs have clearly returned to earth so far this season.   And now with Tallion out, our overall rotation likely has gone from a real plus to a push, and the pen is iffy after Rivero and (hard to believe I am typing this) LeBlanc.

Aw, the Cubs. Funny thing the Cubs. They return to earth to some degree but are the Pirates primed to take advantage? Nope. The Pirates surrendered without a shot being fired. Never intended to challenge the very good but suddenly not-envisible Cubs.

I didn't realize any sport team was about anything less then being the best possible team.
