even if they don't need rest?

They should let the fans know in advance - I paid expecting the Pirates to field a competitive major league team and the Pirates playing to win the game.

With Glasnow pitching, that defense behind him and the lineup coming to bat, a 10-0 win by the Brewers felt very possible and more likely then a Pirates win. :P

Exactly. Frankly, if I'm Jaso I'm getting POed. I can't imagine the guy appreciates being embarrassed with each game.

With Taillion down I fully expected Clint to insert Jaso into the rotation.

Point is, the roster is bad but a better lineup could have been played.

What was the point of this post? Do you think I was implying that McCutchen and Harrison are top players in baseball? Seriously? They are top players on the roster. Certainly better than Gosselin and Jaso...who played in their place.

I hear the arguments for and against resting the teams best players. Don't really care cause I love the game so much that I would watch and go if they went 0-162.

On the other hand I have lived long enough to enjoy seeing the #2 & #3 all time Bucco players, Roberto and Pops. And as I grew up I had other 'favorite' players I loved to see in person. In fact in those days I could almost name the lineup before we left for the game. Line ups did not change too much based on all the stats we have now.

With that said what ticks me off about resting the best players on the team is that it happened on a Sunday at home which is always kids day. The get more youngsters there who wear McCutchen or Polanco, or Marte, or Kang, or Cervelli jerseys and root like crazy for their favorite player. And maybe this is the only time that kid might be at a game this year. I bet that little kid, a future fan and possible season tix holder feels cheated by the team.

The management of this team has far and away forgotten that these kids who come with dad to the games are the future fans with money to spend. Why not create a great atmosphere for them now so they will come back as adults.

The Pirates offer a Sunday season ticket plan. Those poor fans will rarely see the team's best players.

I'm with Possum on this. My first trip to Three Rivers, at age 8, was for a night game against the Padres. Clemente, my all-time favorite, didn't play as he was injured. To an adult, that's understandable but to me it was terribly disappointing. I never got to see him play live as he died that winter. I think if I'd have discovered they just rested him ( once I got older) I might have left fandom behind. The team owes the fans a decent effort at winning, and yesterday the fans were cheated. I'm ticked and I didn't even have tickets.

Man am I sad that you missed your one chance to see Roberto in action. You missed seeing the most dynamic loved player in Pirates history. I was fortunate to see him play most of his career and came away so amazed at his attitude to be the best he could be both on and off the field. Unfortunately early on he was mislabeled by the Pgh media as being a complainer etc but yet he played on. I suggest that you do a lot of Googling to find out more about this wonderful man who remains #1 in my heart.

NBA fans got mad when players were rested on the road. They paid to go see Lebron James and he didn't even make the trip. James did play for the hometown team.

It's a Catch-22. Is it fair for the visiting fans not to see who they came to see play or should you take away from the loyal hometown fans in resting players? No real answer. I think teams do a good job for the most part in announcing line ups early enough or if guys aren't making the trip.

As a kid I read every book, magazine article, newspaper clipping about Clemente. Watched him on tv when we could get the games. I have above t 15 vintage Clemente baseball cards. (Paid 50 cents for one in 1972; my brother laughed at me for being foolish). I know a lot about him and have see video clip oz but never felt the electricity that comes from seeing a great player in action.
