LOL. Being able to add that and keep the payroll under $100M is where the good luck comes in, my friend. The only way to succeed with that low a payroll is for a few long-shots or cheap options to outperform their pay.
Mike Moustakas's stock is dropping. I know he is a Boras guy, but he could help the Pirates now on a two year deal. If Huntington acknowledges the window, this would be a fine signing. Would Moustakas get a better two year deal compared to a five year deal? With a nice short porch in RF? I don't know, but I hope it is being explored.
LOL ... Moustakas won't even consider coming here. I really think you need to acknowledge some things like reality. He has played in a small market situation in KC; won a title too boot. He is looking for a pay day and another chance to win a title. That doesn't happen here.
Some people still treat this like a baseball problem. "If we can find a 3rd base then we check one box toward being a contender." Bobster's original post was to highlight we don't have a baseball problem, we have an integrity problem.
Neal has one job and it has nothing to do with finding a 3rd base: its to keep EVERYONE off balance enough so that the only real question won't be asked: given the unbelievable increase in value, given the unbelievable cash cow MLB is (here you go Bob, here's another $50M) how come Mr Nutting gets to string along a passionate fan base without being held accountable?
Neal got a four year extension with no discernible plan. The only explanation can be that he does his work for Nutting very well. This "story" was brought to light in the winter of 2015 when the FO had the opportunity to truly win a WS. Instead they wasted an opportunity that may not come across again for a generation.
wow.

You act like the Pirates have never signed a free agent. Well, they have. Every single team signs free agents. Every single one, like even the bad teams. Money and opportunity sells.
Moustakas isn't getting any offers yet. The reasons I stated are why he could consider Pittsburgh. If he thinks the Pirates are on the verge of competing again, then he could sign just like the others. The major markets have third baseman unless someone is moved.
Since he would never consider Pittsburgh and that is a huge joke, where do you think he will sign and why?

We're do you disagree? The whole thing makes no sense. We're in a window; we're not in a window. We'll add when the teams ready; if you supported the team like KC then we'd add on. Mr nutting gives us everything we ask for; it's real easy to spend someone else's money. We won't trade our future away for the present; here, we'll give you a starting pitcher and two prospects for Hudson. The draft is a level playing field; Neal's record is one of the poorest MLB but he gets a four year extension...
And on and on. I don't look under rocks for conspiracy theories, but every now and then we just get hit in the head with a rock....and it doesn't feel good. I'd love to have someone make sense of these contradiction that allowed me or anyone to feel like the FO was trying as hard to win as they appear to be to make money.
If you have anything I'd love to hear it.

VA, I think you meant Hutchison (not Hudson). Speaking of which, I heard part of the Pirate Fest Q & A when NH said he was unfairly criticized for trading Liriano and the prospects for Hutchison, repeating that it was not a salary dump but rather a move to improve the team. He forgot to mention that they didn't even call Hutchison up all season and then released him.

Put on the MLB Network. They are at the Winter Meetings and pulling GMs and Managers all the time. They all say the same thing. They all never answer and say their plan is so many things. It is what it is. It is what this thread is titled, but it isn't just the Pirates. I will wait for the action to know the real direction. No GM is going to say their plan in front of everyone. Please, put on the MLB Network.
What would you say if you were Huntington? If you say they are going to add to the current team and looking for certain positions, there goes the price surge of many players (trade or free agent). If you say you are going to retool and trade away your stars, there goes your trading chips. Again, what would you say if you were GM of the Pirates?
Did you put on MLB Network yet?

Yes. Thank you. After a while this faceless cast of characters blend into one another. But Hudson could still be a nice contributor.

Well I wouldn't say things that may have the impact of poking Pirate fans right in the eye. Without context, Neal said nothing out of line. But in the Pirates context it's a whole lot more complicated.
Maybe just say "we're working everyday to make the 2018 and future teams the best they can be."

When people don't agree with what he says, he is a liar. Then when he says "GM speak" people hold him to that? Can you (we) really have it both ways?
That's what I don't get. I don't care what he says because I understand his position and every GM's position.
If he said, "we're working everyday to make the 2018 and future teams the best they can be" that will be one heck of an interview. The thing is, that is what he does say or did say but of course more questions come after a statement like that.
Did you put on the Winter Meetings yet? It's on the MLB Network. If you shut your eyes, you won't know who is talking. That's because they all say the same things.

Name me the most significant free agent pickup we have netted in the last two decades. They sign free agents. Mustaches doesn't fit the mold of a free agent Pittsburgh gets. People who are honest with themselves and understand/watch the motions of our GM know this. It's time you stop thinking a relevant player, coming off a career year (.272, 38 bombs, 85 RBI) and is in his prime would consider Pittsburgh.
From what I saw, his salary was 5.6 Million in 2017. I suspect he is looking for a significant raise and deserves one. Quite a few teams are looking for 3B men. Remember, this is an organization that decided to waive its second best reliever instead of trade him to save 600K. This is an organization that is looking to move its most valuable and versatile player (don't confuse the statement with best) because the 10.3 is too much. This is an organization that didn't reinvest any money into the organization after dispatching losses over the last few years; the suspension of Marte (nothing put back in for the wages it got back) or Kang not being allowed in the country.
We stand the same chance trading for Manny Machado as we do signing Moustakas.
Most people with a brain know we aren't really close to being competitive relative to a play-off spot. With what the Cubs and Cards have done, there is a big separation and right now, the Brewers are better. In addition, if NH has the balls to deal Cole, that subtracts from the appearance this franchise will be competitive. Because you are trading your most talented starter in the eyes of some like you for prospects. and we have a rotation that is a major, major ??? Taillon has potential; Nova is a roller coaster and both Kuhl and Williams are 5s. I won't even bring up Glasnow.
Pittsburgh makes zero sense for Moustakas. remember, he just played in Kansas City. How do you know he doesn't have offers? Because he hasn't signed?
