Why would you want him on another MLB team once he gets cleared? The Pirates still owe his right until 2022 unless they buy him out.

How do you figure out the Bucs own his rights until 2022? Please show a link if you have one where you found out this ascertation.

I wouldn't release him either.   With Kang, we are on the same page Dog.   I'm not convinced it's over.  we control his rights for 2019 as well.

Don't release him.

I don't understand why the Pirates wouldn't get back the two years he missed? I know he isn't getting paid, but he should be under control until 2021, assuming he will be eligible next year.

I think the contract terms continue, but the org doesn't have to pay it.  So the years missed are gone.

There's no reason to release him, to me.  He's going to get a visa eventually, maybe after his probationary 2 years is over.

I don't believe that his career is over at 30-31 years old.  He was a good fielder, with a rifle arm.    That alone is enough reason to hold on and at least try to see how his bat may come back around.

The contract is super team friendly even next season if he's only a good utilityman... let alone if he can actually hit well again.

nope 2019 or bust. We have to non-tender him. It's in his contract. We don't get to take advantage of his service clock and take him to arbitration after 2019. Pretty standard with foreign players.

I took a couple minutes and Googled and found that Dog is absolutely incorrect in his statement about the length of Kang's contract. No where do I find anything stating that it ends in 2022.

Kang's Contract from BucsDugout.

I find it interesting that after his contract is up after 2019, assuming that the Bucs would have exercised the option for that year, the Bucs would have had to non-tender him. He would not have to go through arbitration. Guess Cespedes with the Tigers has a similar clause in his contract. Go figure.

I agree. Nothing to gain by releasing him. Nothing to lose by holding onto him.

I saw it on his Baseball Reference page. Says arb years start in 2019 and free agency in 2022.

Dog, that just means if he's still in MLB the earliest he can be a FA is 2022. He signed a 4-year deal thru 2018 with a team option for 2019. So the Bucs had the option of buying out his first arb year if they wanted to keep him. Baseballereference always lists the first year of arb and FA eligibility for everyone but it doesn't mean they're under contract until then.

I should add that baseball ref is wrong about Kang because he signed as an international free agent and is only under control thru the end of his contract as opposed to domestic players who can be controlled (if the team desires) until the normal FA period. If the Bucs bought out Kang's 2019 season, he would be free to negotiate with anyone else, making him a free agent. There are other sites that show 2019 as his FA year.
