Here are some of the highlights:
“Depending upon what we're able to do in this market, that (postseason) goal may be (achievable) in 2018 or it might be in '19,” Huntington said on Thursday. “We'll see where we're able to go. … We're comfortable being able to go in either direction.”
When asked what will be the deciding factor, Huntington smiled.
“Patience,” he said. “Seeing how it plays out, seeing what opportunities we're able to create and capitalize on.”
“We don't feel forced to do anything,” Huntington said. “We want to capitalize as best we can on maximizing, whether our focus is this year or our window is pushed back a little bit because we're able to acquire players who we think will make a bigger impact on our ability to get back to the postseason.”
“We still have flexibility,” Huntington said, without elaborating.
The free agent and trade markets were slow to develop throughout MLB this offseason. Will the increased supply mean lower asking prices as spring training approaches?
“That may or may not be the case,” Huntington said. “There are a lot of teams having a lot of conversations. That's where patience may be a virtue, but also were patience may get you shut out.”
I guess we might as well stop debating that they should or will do. Even NH has no idea. [sigh]

Hurdle was asked the plan too and given three options: Stay put, add, or rebuild. Hurdle said they can do all three.
It's just GM talk. Actions and seeing the actual plan develop is more important to me. So far, I got nothing.

Pretty much all GMs are vague by necessity. I always think this is an unfair criticism and frankly silly to make a big deal about.
Mention of a "window" is notable though.

It sounds like he's setting the stage for yet another disappointing off-season. Then we'll see how silly and unfair it was.

Sounds like he covered every direction to me.

Maybe but we should judge what he does not that he doesn't give an interesting interview.

"...whether our focus is this year or our window is pushed back a little bit..."
Hmmm. Seems conveniently self-serving that by acknowledging a "window" strategy without defining a specific time line, and backing down from the previously stated "continually competitive" philosophy NH will be able to kick the can down the road indefinitely.

Exactly. They don't have a window. But now they do. This year might be part of that window. Or it might not be. No matter what now happens, NH can say, "See? I told you so." I'm now beginning to understand the 4-year extension. He was extended because of his ability to spin the severe limitations Nutting forces him to work under. Since he's not allowed to spend enough to improve the team, his greatest asset is his ability to talk about the lack of activity as if it's part of some sort of master plan.

We have no more window. It was bricked over in the winter of '15. All we have now is a wall to bang our heads against. We have no vision of intelligent life.
We need someone like Turner Ward to break through that wall and free us from the confinement front office lethargy.
