Williams+Kuhl 2018 Starting pitching and beyond

Was looking at these guy's stats for the last 10 games



Kuhl Quietly has a 3.73 ERA over his last 10 covering 53 Innings



Williams is at 4.57 over his last 10 covering 57 innings



for their past 20 appearances they are a combined 4.17 ERA



in those 20 appearances they've allowed 2 or less Earned Runs 12 times. and 3 or less 16 times out of 20 starts.



they have a combined 2 starts with 4 Earned runs and 2 starts with 5 earned runs allowed

Kuhl has pitched in most games until that sixth inning. I have no idea why he can't get through that inning. Overall, I thought Kuhl would be better. I also didn't expect him to throw 100mph either.

All this to say, it seems they both can be pretty reliable 5th and maybe even 4th starter type material going into 2018.





We have 3 other guys in Cole, Nova, Taillon for at least the next two years as well.



We also have quite a few guys knocking at the door as prospects, and rehabbing former fringe MLB guys in AAA and AA.



for the off season, what moves would you make as a GM knowing that you have alot of cheap and relatively cheap pitching locked up.

Glasnow better figure out how to pitch as well and be some sort of factor in this rotation next year. I know he is still very young but how many times are we going to have to see him come up here and struggle and be a complete headcase before we start saying maybe this guy just doesn't have it.

Keep him in AAA where he can dominate. Allow him to keep building value and flip him in a deal for real MLB talent.

According to PiratesProspects, he is being much more aggressive in the zone now and not trying to nibble so much. His walks are down and his percentage of strikes is much higher. He has abandoned the wind up altogether and pitches only from the stretch and is consistently in the high 90s, touching 100.

Pitching from the stretch the whole time? I don't like that at all. That's what bullpen pitchers do.

Strasburg was pitching entirely from the stretch this year- at least at first- but he was doing so hoping to avoid injury. With Glasnow, it apparently helped him with his control.



I have often wondered what good the windup really does. It cant be for pitch speed, considering that some guys pause in the middle of it.

It has to be for momentum. Fielders do the same thing compared to just standing and using a leg kick and their arm. I also think it is less wear on the arm.



It is pretty new (last ten years or so) where bullpen pitchers just pitch from the stretch. Many do that now. Non-long relief bullpen pitchers are also only geared up for 10-15 pitches. 20 pitches can be a lot.



Something I really never thought of. Playing baseball, I felt I pitched better from the wind up. Of course, no one was on base, less pressure. Good question.

Windup? Stretch? Don't really care how Glasnow goes about it as long as one or the other works to make him the top of the rotation guy as soon as possible.
