Rule 5 Picks
I see the Pirates picked up two rule 5 right-handed pitchers (one by trade of international money to the Phils). As I understand the rules, these guys have to be with the team the entire year. One is on the DL at the moment (or will be once the season starts) so will only have to be on part of the year, but I don't see one guy making it, let along two. There is that old theory in baseball that you can't have too many pitchers . . . I get the sense NH really wants to challenge that rule.

They can make a deal/trade with the team who didn't protect them. That is usually the mindset. Those guys don't cost a lot money wise or player wise in a trade. They were being dumped anyway.

it seems a lot to ask to hold two guys on the roster

not very many contending teams can even hold one.

now to be fair the one guy is coming off of TJ and won't have to go on until much later in the season

yeah, I'm glad they got Burdi, one of the commentators on Bucs Dugout is very high on him and thought he would be a good pick for the Bucs. The Phils make out like bandits in they pay 50k and get 500k.

I guess for us you have to value whether he's better than a 500k LA signing.

You worded that poorly I believe. Phillies get 500K in "space" I believe . You sound like you think the Pirates "paid" them 500K ? At least I think that's how it works .

I think you are right, the Pirates don't pay them 500k, the Pirates can spend 500k less on International signings and the Phils can spend 500k more. Perhaps the Phils still had to pay the 50k selecting fee too.
