Fangraphs review of Pirates top 25 prospects

All in all the minors have more talent than I expected, including more from Latin America (but they are a long way away from the show).

However, when comparing to reviews of Cubs, Brewers and Cards in Fangraphs, the Bucs may only be holding their own as far as prospects go.

With the Bucs approach to getting talent, the team needs to consistently have a farm system that is in top 3 or 4 in baseball.

Interesting list, thanks for sharing. I need to spend some more time digesting the Fangraph's methodology. My knee-jerk reaction if Jordan Luplow didn't make the top 25: 1) our system must be in pretty good shape, 2) I know nothing about baseball, or 3) I might question the credibility of the study.

I hope #1 is true, #2 is probably true, but Luplow can't even make the list????

I wondered about Luplow too. Is he still a rookie?

Below the top 25 list they noted him as one of their "other prospects." I guess he was #26 --- their first alternate.

It's one thing that always seems odd to me with prospect ratings. They'll rank a guy that they list as a fringe starting player in a few years over a guy that's basically a fringe starting player now. I mean, I guess I understand it because they're considering upside but it's still strange.

I always suspect the rankings of organizations that do the whole ML spectrum. They can't possibly know as much about Pirate prospects as a group that focuses on the team's prospects. Just wait till January -- that OnlyBucs.net poll is much better informed and much more reliable (in my mind, at least). :)

I don't know about anyone else, but I mostly base what I think about these guys on what other people think about these guys. I have no actual scouting knowledge myself, heh. I know nothing, and even if I did I don't get down to bradenton or wherever to see them.

Maybe I am too old school, but it's tough for me to read a lot into these projections and stats based on estimates. I do like the tool grades as they can give some perspective against their peers. They are also opinions too.

I do go online to see videos of guys hitting and pitching. YouTube is good to see some video of the recent drafted players and high school kids.

That's all fine, but most of the time I won't know what the heck I'm looking at compared to what a scout would think. Just being honest here.

Did you see the movie "Trouble With The Curve"? Amy Adams can help you.
