Fun fact: 7 different players have batted cleanup for the Pirates this season. Two (Stallings, Gonzalez) have also hit as low as 8th. One (T. Frazier) was released. One (Craig) has only played 3 games since being called up. One (Evans) is hitting .216. One (Polanco) is hitting .200.

Gregory is part of that group and we want to see improvement over time out of that entire group, and Gregory is one of the guys in that group."

It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to know Polanco will not be here next year. So the comment about trying to build and learning about the players and "And Gregory is one of those guys" seems slightly disingenuous. Since that can't be the real reason Polanco plays, it can only be in hopes of trading him if he ever improves. Good luck with that. ::) [/quote
That was a whopper! We need to keep this Cherington quote handy for the day that will come very soon when Polanco is released outright.
One thing we've learned about BC is he says that stuff I think to back the manager, but he has no problem getting rid of guys most quickly.
Right you are. Huntington never let go of his mistakes, regardless of the damage they did. Already BC has let a few guys go who he brought in. He evaluates them quickly and cuts the cord just as quickly.
Ben sees what he has, then doesn't like what he sees?
Yes. Ben put a lot of effort into building up the talent in the minors but very little effort to improve the MLB roster. Clearly, that was by design since it would take a whole lot more money than Nutting would spend to give this year's Bucs a fighting chance. So most of Ben's moves at the MLB level have been throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. If Ben doesn't like what he sees, he packs someone's suitcase.
Fowler and Alford came and went. Tom, Stokes and Gamel are on tryouts. These are all players that basically no one else wanted so they weren't obtained to be impact players. Ben gives them a chance and if they don't show much, they're gone. Except, of course, Polanco. ;)
Of course, BOB likes what Ben has, so nobody's packing Ben's suitcase anytime soon.
