We had more than our share of guys we drafted and who did well in the lower miners the washed out on reaching the majors. This was less an issue with drafting than it was with development. I'm guessing this is what he's referring to.

I wonder. That means, I'm not sure one way or the other.
Pedro Alvarez and Gerrit Cole were two examples of GOOD picks. As "bad" as Alvarez was, guys were on my case when he tied for the league's HR title. He went bad well after his pick was made. Any team picking after us would have scooped him up.
On the other hand, we've had some busts or near busts. I dnk whether they were poor selections or something else.

Since the draft came into existence the Bucs have had the # pick 3 times.
Brad Lincoln - 2006 - Littlefield GM
Daniel Moskos - 2007 - Littlefield GM
Tony Sanchez - 2009 - Huntington GM
?????? 2022 - Cherington GM
Let's hope GM Ben has a better pulse on the players in the 2022 draft than Littlefield and Huntington did.

Other than Tony Sanchez, the Pirates always seemed to take the consensus top talent available, including when they took Mark Appel. I guess Reese McGuire. When they were drafting later, that gets muddled and there is not really a consensus.
Plus they were drafting players in later rounds that had clear pedigree's, such as big time college commitments and high rankings from scouting services.
The Huntington problem was these players all had development issues. Look at guys like Newman and Frazier, they were never considered to be good glove guys. Suddenly they became top defenders when they played only one position. i dont know if it was complete disfunction, inability to figure out where people fit or what.

the other issue with the statement is Cherington made it pretty clear he relied on his scouts for the picks this year. Those scouts are the same ones that were around under Huntington. Joe Dellicarri has been the Scouting Director since 2013, Cherington made it clear the draft plan was heavily influenced by Dellicarri.
