Expect one maybe both to be traded this week at the winter meetings. Who do you think!

Listening to WFAN NY this morning and the hosts are talking about the acquisition of Stanton blocking Clint Frazier. One host suggests Cole for Frazier but John Heyman says the Pirates wouldn't take that deal.

Well, the Yankees are going to have to give up a bunch to get Stanton. Wouldn't you think Frazier goes to Miami? Who will the Yankees have left to acquire Cole after that trade?

Right now the rumors seem to say that Stanton is primarily a salary dump and the Yankees are only giving up Starlin Castro and some mid level prospects.

That wouldn't be surprising. In any deal when one team is taking on a boatload of salary, they give up less in player compensation.

Derek Jeter is giving a superstar to the Yankees for nothing but cash, while previous world champion royals being forced to sell off; all while MLB brass and pundits insist the system in baseball is working fine and fair for all.

If/when Cutch gets traded for Starlin Castro and some mid-level prospects, what would the consensus be on that one?

Huge win for the marlins.   They successfully controlled one of the best hitters in baseball for years as a "small market" and then traded him for something.

They didn't "mortgage the future" and ruin themselves as an organization for years, I was guaranteed they were doing.   Sure, they didn't do anything else well and didn't add around him, but the Stanton contract was a success for them.

They retained the otherwise unretainable by offering him a "dumb, ridiculous, silly, scary" contract.

I recall analysts praising the Marlins for that contract when it was given because it was backloaded and it was anticipated Miami when trade him before the big money kicked in. That's exactly what they did. He got 6.5 mil in 2014 and 2015, 9 mil in 2016 and 14.5 mil in 2017. Beginning 2018 he gets 25, 26, 26, 29, 29, 32, 32, 32, 29, and 25 mil with a 10 million buyout the following year at age 38. Marlins had him for 7 years thru age 27. NY now has to pay him for 11 years at 25+ mil at ages 28-38. Furthermore, the Marlins have finished under .500 in all 7 of Stanton's seasons with them including 3 last place finishes. As Branch Rickey said of Ralph Kiner: they finished last with him, they could finish last without him.
