You were saying GW?
When I wrote it, the team wasn't below .500. Situations change. Expectations sometimes change with them.

They did, but it hurt that Scherzer chose some other team. Might have changed things some. Wasn't their only issue, but an obvious factor. Gotta play the 162, or some other teams will.

seems like a scapegoat to me, they had high expectations, but was the failure all on the manager?

That sometimes happens when a team underperforms. And the Padres had some locker room issues and and an epic collapse. On August 10th they were 67-49. The rest of the way they went 12-34. That's a bad look for a manager and Tingler didn't have enough of a track record to weather the storm. 2020 was his first year as an MLB manager but that was only a 60 game season even though they did well. It's never all the manager's fault. But enough went wrong for them this year that they didn't want him returning at the helm next year.

That 12-34 says it all. All bets were off once the team fell below .500. To Surg's implied questions, the bets may have been off before that. Below .500, and it was going to happen
Not because of payroll. It was because that Padres roster had too much talent to accept anything less than a .500 result. Also, to some implied comments, anything less than Second Wild Card may have led to the plank walk.

As late as September 9 they were still 10 games over .500 (75-65) and had a 1.5 game lead over the Reds for the 2nd WC spot. Over the remaining 22 games of the season they went 4-18.
