Regarding Polanco, my observation:
His lack of work ethic and focus shows through every facet of his game. While other toolsy players develop and refine, Polanco gets sloppier.
Add in the constant lower body injuries and you've got a guy approaching bust status about as much as you have a guy ready to break out. Could go either way. Polanco is a wildcard. He has talent. Horray! Big deal. The big leagues are littered with talented players who couldn't refine.
Maybe the most likely outcome at this point is for him to be replacement level one year, solid the next and so on and so forth. An erratic, sub-standard, DL marred career.
Comparing him to a hypothetical Yelich doesn't even matter. Yelich isn't coming here. but regarding the comparison between them...Hope and prayer aren't a strategy, they're a religion.
If you can cartwheel yourself into believing Polanco and Yelich are comparable, you can do just about anything. I'm VERY Jealous. I wish I could do that.
Dmetz, I too am not a fan of WAR. Are you saying his defensive WAR last year was good? That seems odd if true.
Yes. Polanco is a plus RF by defensive metrics.
Wow. Having watched him play (and cringing whenever a ball is hit his way), it makes it hard to take that WAR seriously.
Well, the point more that defense is a component of WAR, and yes the defensive aspect of it can be pretty suspect, as you point out. Alot of variance from year to year from the same players, which is a flag.
In the case of Yelich and Polanco, however, Polanco would have come in at below replacement in 2017 had it not be for the plus defense buoying the overall WAR.
Statistically yelich destroys Polanco at most everything. Conventional. Advanced, doesn't really matter. I think the conventional numbers are even worse for Polanco

How can the Brewers be so foolish as to mortgage 2021 for an all-star outfielder now??
So irresponsible.
So irresponsible.

I don't get the Pirates being bashed because the Brewers finally made a move. The Brewers did nothing the last five years after making a strong playoff run. They had the lowest payroll in baseball last year. But now, they are the best team in the league with the best owner? Doesn't seem fair to me.
Good for the Brewers. They should be making moves. They had 64 wins when the Pirates went for it in 2015. The Brewers used their payroll flexibility. They are currently near the Pirates now in payroll.

It's cute that you come back to they didn't do anything for 5 years. Pittsburgh hasn't done anything like this since when (don't lie and don't oversell retreads). They are showing that they care. They could crawl in a hole; cry poor and not upgrade after seeing Chicago, St. Louis do their thing, or say we are going to add too. Pittsburgh didn't go for it in 2015. They didn't bring in one significant piece in 2015 that was young and playing well. They brought in retreads and players who weren't playing well. Who did they get of this magnitude to "go for it"? Be honest with yourself.
Their moves to start the season were Bastardo, Cervelli, Florimon, Hart, and Kang. That isn't Cain and Yelich. Don't oversell Kang.
Going for it? The trade deadline brought Bastardo, Blanton, Happ (who sucked in Seattle), an old ARam, Travis Snider (after he sucked in Baltimore) and Soria. Retreads essentially.
The Pirates are being bashed because they failed to do anything after 2015 when their window was still open. They are being bashed because they continue to keep prospects over bringing in someone significant to help. They are being bashed because they don't reinvest the money on the product. They won't reinvest the money saved on Cole and Cutch. Don't use Rivero's four or five year extension as the reinvestment. That doesn't help with the product in 2018. They didn't reinvest the money saved in 2017 with Kang's deal and Marte's suspension. They never reinvest with quality, but reclamation projects. And we have an owner and a GM remaining steadfast that they are trying to put a competitive team on the field and they don't acquire anything that truly helps, or spend any money on someone that truly helps. Instead, they cry poor.
KC went the extra step to get over the hurdle with acquisitions of Cueto and Shields. They won a title after losing the WS the year before. Very similar market. Minnesota appears to be trying to build on their 2017 ... Milwaukee is not going status quo or getting worse. All three very similar markets. Cleveland - very similar market. And you continue to not see the obvious.

Why are the Pirates getting bashed?
1. Everyone here is a Pirate fan and wants the team to be good.
2. Miami was willing to deal a very talented player which presented an unusual opportunity for teams needing a young, cost controlled outfielder.
3. The Pirates had just dealt Cutch which opened up a spot in the outfield for the Pirates.
4. The Pirates had just lowered their payroll significantly by trading Cole and Cutch so they could unquestionably afford to add a modest salary like Yelich's, and thus replenish some of the talent level lost with Cutch leaving.
5. The Brewers are a comparable market size team in our own division making them a transparent rival for assets and expenditures.
6. The Pirates apparently didn't see this as an opportunity to get better even though they often talk about years of control regarding players salaries, but their direct competitor, the Brewers did.
7. Pirate ownership and management took this opportunity to do nothing, save more money and not improve the team which clearly Yelich would have done.
I am bashing the Pirates because they didn't attempt to compete in the game of baseball against a division rival. They are competing only in the business of baseball as regards their bottom line, and that shouldn't make any fan of the game happy.

I think we have a right to bash the Pirates. They got a check for 50 million in the Disney thing. They will get an additional check of 20-40 million in revenue sharing. If that number is higher - closer to 40, then our payroll could be used with those two checks and Bob could still pocket 10 million with those two checks. That is a major reason why I have a major problem. People call it being a business man. I call it criminal in a sorts, especially when you see the value his franchise is worth. He continues to make tons of money, but won't spend a penny.
I tried to embed a tweet by Passan saying that the Marlins and the Pirates may be in violation of the rules of revenue sharing since they basically dumped salary and isn't using any of that money to upgrade the product.

Why doesn't Cervelli, Kang, Liriano, and Burnett count for helping the 2015 Pirates? Four players all played significant roles.
Those trades you mentioned didn't help? Now, they are bad trades? Why didn't the Brewers keep their long time 3B instead of dumping his salary?
I am praising the Brewers. They made some good moves and took a risk by giving up some nice prospects. I just don't see why people are bashing the Pirates in the process. Like, 2013-2015 didn't happen. I am just being fair. The Pirates were where the Brewers want to be just a few years ago. When the Pirates were winning (and I thought caring), the Brewers were losing and finishing 4th in the division.

I don't get bashing the Pirates because what the Brewers just did. The Brewers had a $60 million payroll last year. They actually put together a nice team, a little older, but they won last year. Why are they getting praised in winning with a low payroll, but the Pirates got blasted? Does that really seem fair?
I didn't want to rebuild this year for Pirates. I wanted to add as I thought they just needed a few players. Especially, with the free agent market speculation and it is happening. The Pirates could have added some fine players. Instead, they went the rebuild route. I actually think they can add and sell. But I doubt they will.
Plenty of reasons to bash the Pirates. I get it. I am just saying the Brewers finally make some moves and the Pirates are getting bashed. The Brewers want to be where the Pirates just were a few years ago. They have a good window of opportunity. They should have added more at the deadline last year.

Brewers Interested in Yelich
The Brewers just beat the Pirates at the game of baseball. It isn't that the Brewers made a great move that matters to me as a Pirate fan, but that the Pirates did absolutely nothing when they could have. That's most certainly bash worthy.
