What Will NH do first this offseason?

At this point I would be surprised if the Quintana trade actually happens. It seems like a lot of teams are showing interest and NH's offer is only one of many. My guess is NH has offered what he is willing to and will not add more, while the Sox are looking for more. On such differences potential trades all apart.

I also see a Quintana deal to be unlikely. He's in this weird sphere where he is incredibly valuable, but not worth the cost of acquiring him.

I think we can just take the Eaton trade out of the conversation, that trade is much closer to the D'backs trade for Shelby Miller (overpay for a marginal player because he has years of control).

So let's just look at the Sale return, Quintana's era is close to Sale and he has the additional year of control. So you can see similarities, but Sale is a game breaker. He averaged over 7 innings a start, compared to 6.5 for Quintana, and he struck out another ~50 players.

Quintana is not worth a Sale package, the White Sox are probably using that as a benchmark, I don't think either side needs to budge at this point.

yeah, a Sale package is too much for Quintana. Years of control are nice but for quality team you need the more talented player.

Wha?

Eaton is anything but a marginal player

Eaton last 3 seasons has 12.8 fWAR / 15.3bWAR

McCutchen last 3 years has 13.3 fWAR / 10.5 bWAR

Eaton is incredibly underrated.

He's a solid outfielder.  Regardless of what his WAR is, he's an effective top of the order player, but not more than that.  I know that the Pirates have struggled for that type of guy, but that's not an asset you use a guy like Giolito to acquire.  He's a complementary piece, and if you want to cherry pick WAR numbers, he has had one year that was comparable to McCutchen's prime, and the majority of that value came from his defensive metrics.

This is another example of how bad WAR is of a stat. McCutchen has outperformed Eaton on offense in almost every category. It is hard to rate defense and base running, but that seem heavily favored in WAR and helps Eaton.

I do agree Eaton is underrated, but he is a complimentary piece, not a player you build a line up around. Would anyone trade McCutchen or Marte or Polanco straight up for Eaton based on talent alone? This is probably why Huntington asked for more. McCutchen is worth more.

The statement was made that Adam Eaton is a marginal player. That is FALSE. That's all I was responding to. No one is talking about lineup construction. I was just making a point that the gap between Eaton and Cutch isn't huge. Is McCutchen a better player? Sure. Is Eaton a Marginal outfielder? Definitely not.

I know, sorry. It was nothing against your post. It was more against the WAR stat. Kind of crazy to me they are that close in WAR.

So marginal is a bit of an exaggeration. but still, he's a RF with a career slugging percentage of .414. And he's objectively not undervalued because the Nats gave up two elite pitching prospects for him.
