Polanco = Tabata??????

Post by DemDog »

Listening to 93.7 the Fan this morning and Bob Pompeani suggested that perhaps Polanco is another Jose Tabata. I found it disheartening if that became true. Yet it does seem that Polanco is moving in the direction of Jose.

Signed to a team friendly contract through his arb years hoping that he could become part of if not the face of a championship team.

Tell me your thoughts on Pompeani's comment.

Based on stats and play on the field or because he might not live up to his contract?

Well, that's pretty much one and the same. They made the point that Tabata signed a contract and then failed to produce on the field. Then they wondered if Polanco might turn out to be another disappointment on the field after getting a contract.

Not necessarily. Polanco is being paid more than what Tabata got.

I don't think Tabata ever hit 10 HR or had 50 RBI in a season. Tabata probably had one decent OPS season.

Polanco has done better on the field in my opinion. Living up to his contract, time will tell. I think more is expected from Polanco than it was from Tabata.

Good question. I thought this was going to be Polanco's breakout year. He needs to pick it up.

There is a disconcertingly similar kind of underachievement about their stats. Wasn't there some question about Tabata's real age though? If he was considerably older than advertised that could make make a valid comparison problematic.

As I said in a different thread yesterday, it depends on what your expectations on for Polanco.

If you expect him to be a terrible defensive OFer and an average to slightly above average offensive performer, then you shouldn't be too concerned.

If you expect him to be the middle of the order superstar that the front office pretends that he is, then prepare to be disappointed.

I think he's going to be much better than Jose Tabata. Despite his poor start, I imagine his numbers for the season will be pretty close to last year's.  But his defense is downright embarrassing. Any stat that tells you he's a good defender should immediately be discarded.

since he's only making a million dollars this year.

he has some time before we think he is not worth his contract

the Cub's Schwarber has a lower WAR than Polanco in LF

I wonder if cubs fans are ready to give up on him based on a month?

Schwarber was advertised as a terrible fielder whose bat was needed in the lineup. Polanco was advertised as an outstanding fielder. So Cubs fans probably don't expect much from Schawarber in the field. Expectations for Polanco's defense were much higher.

I don' think Pompeani said anything that astute or enlightening about the Polanco situation. The Pirates offered a deal and Polanco took it. So far it looks like Polanco made a very good decision. Looked to be a "fair" deal when it was made . What can you do ? I'm sure the guy is trying but no doubt he's regressing.

That said how about what many thought would be the best OF in baseball looking like maybe now being one of the worst. Was Cutch maybe 22-23 years old in high school ? He really plays like a player that's like 3-4 years past his prime. Obviously the suspension was a killer but still....
